hi guys, this might seem slightly stupid to some of you so sorry in advance for wasting ur time, but
im going on a big roadtrip in my second hand VN wagon, ive recently changed the radiator and hoses and cooling system seems to be fine. I just want to know very general things about basic or important checks i should do before going on a long road trip/journey where i might clock up to 5,000 -10,000 km....i hope the car will last! also i run it on LPG- well its a dual system.
anythng you can suggest....
thanks
I'd be checking the following;
Brakes
Front and rear suspension suspension
Repack front Wheel bearings or at least check them
Fluid levels ie diff
Fresh engine oil
Service the auto
Check tyres for any damage
Take a good tool kit
Fuel pump and filter, if you don't know how old the pump is get a new one.
Check universal joints
Check under car for any leaks, damage etc
Take of drive belt ad check the condition of the alternator bearings and water pump
Take out alternator regulator and see how much of the brushes ar left if worn take a new regulator or spare alternator
Replace the engine coolant if it needs it
Load test the battery
ok whats the bear minimum....im definitly not knowledgable or able to do all that! but thanks for such a comprehensive list...
bare minimums?
Just change your oil and filter, make sure you have pleanty of driving music, pack your tool kit and have a good time. VN's where made for the long trips so she should last.
id do what wortus said but if not and you want just basic stuff , change your plugs to when you change your oil .. or do what i did ... did a FULL service and tune on it that way i knew that the motor and transmission was ok then just check for any leaks that are concerning and check tyres and brakes and all fluid levels and top up and replace what is neededhope that helps ..
if you can, grab a copy of the gregorys manual for it, a lot of people have them so you might be able to borrow one. It could help get you out of trouble if you're in the middle of nowhere.
Also, consider (temporarily) upgrading your RAA coverage to give you a longer range tow etc..
