Hey, my calais wont start, all the electrics and everything work so its not the battery and the fuel pump is engaging but when ya turn the key it makes a really loud clicking sound in the engine but wont actually try to turn over. It worked last time i started it which was a while ago (shame) but now it wont. Any ideas?
p.s. Im a girl so please explain in detail thanks =]
dead battery, even if the dash lights come on but the starter motor just clicks its a dead battery or a busted solenoid.
Battery low or old and not supplying enough power, starter motor dead or not engaging or worst case scenario seized motor.
To test the battery, get a multimeter, set it to volts and put it on the battery terminals. Then get someone to hit the key and watch if the voltage drops dramatically. (It will normally drop a couple volts)
Starter motor isnt really easy to test without taking off the inspection plate (not that easy on an auto) or taking the starter motor out. Maybe just get a hammer, crawl under the car and give it a firm hit or two. Might just need freeing up.
The motor, get a breaker bar (or decent ratchet if your strong enough) and a socket to suit the bolt on the crank pulley (imperial but but 22mm, 24mm? comes to mind) and try turning the motor by hand.
Hope thats helps. Good luck!
Could be corroded terminal on the battery - have they been cleaned lately?
