reason is probably that the vn headlights arent designed for hids and is blinding them.

Basically because a car can only be road legal in Australia if the headlights are manufacturers' specifications - in other words if it came out with convential globes then only those globes can be fitted. HID also need to be self-levelling, have headlight washers and have projector lenses to direct the beam of light.

They are cheap. I just check on the bay for them and they vary from 50 single hi beam to 110 for dual xeon tubes( hi/low beam)

good quality ones set me back about $200 from ebay, be carefull if your getting a Hi/low kit, some of them are cheaper like the ones vlad suggested, but they usually have a HID highbeam but Halogen low beam, and that just blows lol.. but yeh some they their illegal, i got pulled over by the coppers in my AU wagon once and they said how awesome they looked lol, people used to flash me (not the girls unfortunately) about them being to bright, so i just adjusted them down a tad like george did untill i stopped getting flashed, problem solved lol.

probably the most best thing i ever did to that car lol, since i work nightshift and always driving in the dark lol

and nobodys mentioned it yet, but get the globes that are 6500K in color it syour best buy, any lower and they will start to work like the standard ones, or any higher and they start turning blue and purple, and yeh they look cool like that but its an ass to drive with and you cant really see any better, and its a copper magnet aswell, so 6500K is a perfect white light, and you'll be supprised how much more the street signs glow now, theres one down the end of my street and it reflects so bright i have to turn away hah..

heres an ebay link to the lights i just brought for my VY $260 Kit,
    Here

and also the globes are strong as hell too, while fitting them to my AU falcon, the wind blew them off the wheelie bin i had them sitting on and the crashed onto the concrete below, i thought theyre stuffed, but plugged em in and they still worked i was pretty supprised!!

Good things I've noticed with HIDs:
-Light the road better then halogens on rainy nights
-Burn cooler too, they put a lot less heat off then halogens.

    The Bad:
-I've had people flash me (With their headlights that is)
