Most likely the trans. problem will be a sticking 2-3 shift valve or a sticking throttle valve, both items inside the transmission => probably cheapest to replace trans.; used trans. ~$300 from wrecker (but you may find something cheaper from a private vendor) plus 1-1 1/2 hr labour to fit or a weekend to DIY, plus ~5L trans fluid to fill the new trans. and a few more to flush the trans. cooler(s) that is(are) in the car (radiator).

Easy checks before jumping to a replacement are:

Check the fluid level - drive for a few minutes to get to operating temp. then check the level on the dipstick with the engine running, trans. in neutral or park.

Fluid condition - should be light red in colour (drip some off the dipstick onto a sheet of A4 + there should be no bits of sediment sticking to the dipstick)

Check/adjust the TV cable. At the back, on top of the engine, are two cables. The frontmost one is the throttle valve (aka "kickdown") cable. Push in the metal tab that is in the plastic housing that is clipped into the metal bracket on the top of the engine. The cable should spring back. Then open the throttle all the way and the cable should ratchet back (you will hear it). It's best to open the throttle from under the bonnet, on the engine, rather than simply press the accelerator pedal to the floor.

When pulled gently, the TV cable (not the sheath around it) should also have light spring resistance (to make sure that is not broken or disconnected inside the trans.).
