A year or so ago I got a bit impatient with my handbrake button. Pushed it in way too far, something snapped, and the handbrake was permanently on. Had to disconnect it under the car.

Anyway, now I'm trying to fix it. Just got the rubber handle off and the button out - and it turns out there's nothing attached to the button anymore. The lever doesn't catch on the cog, so it just snaps back to the halfway down position. And there's an out-of-place looking metal bar going down into the depths, that emerges a cm or two above the hooks that are supposed to hold the handbrake in place.

Is that bit of metal sposed to be there? What's supposed to connect to the button?
