ok turbo or supercharge??? and the difference between performance and cost - Well id say more people supercharge, as the SC-14 supercharger can be adapted fairly easily for under a grand, not brilliant for power however.

Common mods: Cold air intake, kn filter, exhaust systems and tunes, after that lesser common ones are shift kit, cams, etc

Few rules/ regs: Emissions and noise levels on exhausts, Emissions when it comes to turbo / supercharger. Often brakes legally need to be upgraded with major things like turbos and chargers

Quick google on turbochargers and supercharges will get you answers for them.

Most common mods in order 1. wheels 2. Springs (note no shocks) 3. something shiny

before any mods are carried out you should do a major service. oil and filter, fuel filter, plugs and leads, trans service, diff oil, cooling system, brake fluid etc. also check things like shocks, bushes and brakes and replace anything that is worn

    brakes:
standard VN/VP brakes are very average. if chasing big power increased then a brake upgrade is a must
minumum is quality pads $200+ (front and rear)
    possibly new quality rotors (slotted)
    or
VT upgrade $700-1000 + booster and master cylinder upgrade $300

    engine mods:
    (basic)
    cold air intake $70-300
    high flow filter $150
    tune (chip) $100
    headers $400-800
    cat back exhaust system $400-800
    high ratio rockers $500-700

engine mods: (these numbers will vary depending on engine type V6 or V8)
    (extensive)
    full rebuild $2k+
    modified heads and intakes $1000+
    stroker kits $3000+

    power adders:
    SC14 supecharger $1000-2000 3psi boost (CRS) V6
Raptor supercharger $4500 9psi boost V6 - complete bolt on kit with tune. recommended trans mods (auto and manual) (raptor superchargers)
proflow V6 turbo kit $5500. still needs tuning ($1000) will also need trans mods like the raptor kit above (pro flow fabrication)

depending on the power output a fuel system upgrade will also be required
    high flow pump $300-500
    surge tank $150
various fuel lines and fittings $100-300

    trans mods

    T5 (manual)
normally a Heavy duty clutch is required ($500-1000) and short shifter (billter products or ripshift $500-600)

    4l60 (VN/VP)
biggest trans coooler available - a must
shift kit and billet (2nd gear) servo minimum for any car producing significant power output above standard $200-500
full trans rebuild (required for long term use with high power outputs) $2-3K
    high stall converter $500-1000

    diff mods
    gears - $300-1000
LSD - $200-2000 (depending on make, standard Holden LSD Vs Kaaz LSD)
minispool $80-200 (ilegal for road use but fun )
    locker $700

    suspension mods
first mod should always be new shocks $200-1000 (and possibly springs $300-500). these make a huge difference to the way a car handles and stops. if your intending to lower then get shocks to suit the springs your gonna fit
bushes- urethane type (i bet all the ones on the car are stuffed anyway, so this is a maintenance issue as much as a mod just like shocks)
sway bars $500 (front and rear)
    strut brace $250
various bushes $100-1000 depending on what needs doing
    coil over suspension $2k+

    wheels:
on a commodore i'd suggest 15" rims minimum with atleast 215 with tires. anything smaller is just to small for a car of this size and weight when driven to anything above grandma pace

check the sponsors section for more info on particular parts/upgrades

that should just about cover your school project

then there is the bling, wheels, body kits, sound systems etc.

in reality you need to decide on how much you have to spend and then workout how much power you can afford
