    Default VN Cat Converter

    Hi All

Have just started to notice a metallic popping/tapping sound which at first sounded like it was the muffler but now it appears it's coming from the cat.

Any ideas how easy they are to replace yourself and where a good place in Sydney would be to get one? Have just spent almost a grand getting new water pump, new thermostat, new engine mounts, service etc and don't want to spend any more money than I should if you know what I mean.

    Cheers
    Aaron

It's not the sound of the metal contracting after you switch the car off is it as this is normal.

Four bolts to remove the cat, but they are prone to snapping off. Run the car for a few minutes to warm it up, then spray the bolts with WD40 or CRC or similar, wait about ten minutes, then they should come out. They can be tight. Once you get the cat out, look inside, you will see straight away if it is broken.

The other thing that the VN/VP's are prone to is where the engine pipes meet, there is a small metal divider welded in the Y section to help merge the exhaust, this can break off and rattle in the engine pipe sounding like the cat has broken.

I can do you a cat at $175 shipped. Straight bolt in.

Thanks mate. Actually it's not the cat making the sound but the the central exhaust section (cat back???) between the cat and the rear exhaust

When does it make the sound? If it's after you turn the car off and get out it's probably just the muffler loosing heat and the metal contracting? How rusty does it look?, check it for any rust holes. The inside may also have rusted off and be loose it would make a rattling noise witht he engine runing if this was the case.
If it needs a new exhaust just get a Lukey off the shelf system and put it on. I got the one that has a larger diameter pipe and larger mufflers (not the straight through type they look just like the standard ones, same path etc for the exhaust just a less restriction and it was fine and not too noisy.

sorry about that, didn't supply enough info.

Nah the sound is while you're driving/idling though it's not as pronounced when idling due to the lower revs me thinks.

I've just dropped it down the local garage - fingers crossed it's not an engine issue. Thanks all for the info though!
