the best way i would say is bolt the wheel back on to the boss kit with the centre nut on a couple of threads then bang the wheel from behind with your hands

Bolt the steering wheel back on to the boss, do it up tight.
Make sure you still have the main center nut on, but not tightened up, just so there is a gap behind the nut and the boss.
This is to save smashing your face very hard with the wheel, as it will let go very suddenly.
Then grab the steering wheel, and pull on it while you carefully rock it, by pulling more on the left, then on the right, then on the left again.. and so on.
Keep going, even when it seems like it's not moving, it will be.
But whatever you do, DO NOT BASH ON THE STEERING SHAFT, as this can damage the collapsible steering, an important safety feature in the event of an accident.

Ok, if that doesn't work, even after spraying some WD40 on the shaft, you may need to buy yourself a steering wheel or pulley puller.
Depending on what type you get, you can leave the wheel off, and just remove the boss by itself with the puller.

I have been through this also, you wont move it by hand, that's for sure. I'm a big bloke and the steering wheel bent in half before the friggin' boss moved. Buy a steering wheel puller for about $20 from repco and take your steering wheel bolts along to a bolt shop and buy some 30mm-40mm long bolts that match the thread and some strong washers to use with the puller. The standard bolts that come with the puller won't match the boss and the bolts you buy will be too small to fit the washers supplied with the puller. You'll wind up using it more than once anyway, when you change tyres or get a front end alignment, or even just over time you'll find the steering wheel is off centre and you'll want to pull the boss again to straighten the bugger up. Of course if you are in the east of melb you can PM me and I'll lend you mine.
