    Default T700 box

    Hi all,

I don't know if it is just me but i get the impression after doing 2 trannies in 8 months that the T700 box is a piece of crap!!!! I haven't abused the car so it is either a crap box or it was not rebuilt properly. It cost me over $1700 so i expected it to be right!

Anyone else have the same opinion as me on this or am i just unlucky?

I would really like to hear your views on this as i am a bit dumbfounded as to the performance of mine lately!

    Cheers.........................Pete!

    t700 is the auto right?
if that the case yes u must be one unlucky bugger,
the one in our car hasnt been touched since new except for oil and it doesnt copp abuse, well hardly ever.
it hasnt been a problem, except for an odd rattling noise just before it changes gear on light throttle at like 1800-2000rpm.
i guess it handles less power being a v6 but yeah i havnt had any problems with it

TH700's are pretty good, especially behind a standard or near standard engine.

Apart from a botched rebuild, early failure on a replacement might be due to trash left in the trans. cooler +/or lines from the failed trans. Were they flushed out before the new trans. went in?

Correct TV cable adjustement is critical also.

Incorrect - high or low - fluid level too. The final check of fluid level should be done with the trans. hot = 10-15 min drive for heat soak.

Coolant in the fluid will kill a trans quickly too but that will show up as "strawberry milkshake" fluid.

    Thanks for that guys,

I contacted the original rebuilder this morning and he was pretty good about it. He wanted me to return the car or box to Brissy but living in North Qld i said that wasn't an option. I have sent the car to a Mackay Auto Specialist who is going to liase with the Brissy company to have it fixed. I told them it would have to be warranty as no box should die in that time frame, especially of the same disease, lol. Everything had been done right since the rebuild, ie authorised mechanic did all the pulling out and refitting of the box etc. I have kept an eye on it as i am a bit anal about it now. Will let y'all know what i find out.

    Cheers.......................Pete!

Well, i sent it to Dan Kennedy in Mackay. He diagnosed the problem in about 10mins and i am back on the road again. It was the plastic drive on the governor stripped out which only left me with first and reverse. I queried him about it doing the very same thing in august last year. He said it most probably was the fault but wouldn't commit to it as he had not done the job previously.

I feel i was pretty much stiffed on the previous supposed rebuild. Dan reset the adjustments to what it should be and it changes much better than it ever has before.

All up it cost me $288.40 and he put in a second hand governor as well as the other one had a bit of wear in it that he wasn't happy with. For anyone in the area i would highly recommend this guy for his quality work and honesty.

The 4l60E/TH700-electronic are pieces of crapp. I hate the electronics in them, they override any modifications you do.. Shift kits don't work nice.... So I have gone for a 4l60 VN box, fully manulised. Put it in tomoro, I'm guessing it will be sweet as.

The reason people have transmissions that keep failing, is because they never properly flush their cooling lines and radiator. Once a transmission fails, it spits out particles of metal through the torque converter and trans lines. This crap stays in the radiator (and the torque converter if you reuse it) and then finds its way into the new transmission when you install it. In turn, it ****s over the new transmission and the cycle begins again.

I had a mate who destroyed four transmissions in a row before I ripped out all his lines and radiator + flushed them with metho and a gurney. After that, his fifth second hand T700 lasted until the car bloody well died from old age.
