Okay long story short, picked up a vn with 2 months rego for 400 bucks. Driving home there was a loud knocking noise in the engine. Pulled into the servo filled up went to drive off the noise was extremely loud and by the time it got to the servo exit it just ceased. If you try start it it just makes a clunk. Stuck for ideas is it worth looking into or has a major bearing or piston f***ed up?
Any help appreciated
sounds like a bearing. the best way to check is to take out your timing belt if you still have these symptoms its probably time for a new motor <i got mine from Auto Parts Recyclers - Australia Wide Delivery - Live Online Chat > for 4oo bucks free delivery and warranty. just dont forget to replace the rear main seal
did you check the oil before you drove off. I did the same thing with a 71 vw with only 70,000ks on it from factory. Good engine ruined coz the owners didn't top up the oil before my long 950k trip home.
Definatly not the oil, thats the first thing we checked. Someone suggested it could be the harmonic balancer? I hope its not time for a new motor and that price is worth more then the whole car LOL
Could be the harmonic, check the rubber for any chunks missing, or if it is wobbly.
When mine ate itself, it was makin a bad noise clunking noise, but it was intermittent, like even few min it would come n go.
3/4 of the rubber was missing
Wound the egnine anti clockwise and trie starting it and yeah the conclusion is it's rooted. Anyone wanna buy a complete vn with a f***ed motor, original good condition, if i cant sell it as a whole car ill strip it
You didn't hear the noise when you first started it?
So you checked the harmonic balancer? Did you try to start it with the belt off?
Oh, and for future reference redrags, V6's don't have timing belts. I think you might be referring to the serpentine or engine belt?
Yeah, it started making a rattling noise, quiet at first then grew louder and louder then just stopped, yeah its not the harmonic balancer. The noise literally sounded like a piston was banging up and down on the bonnet
catastrophic engine failure?
hehe piggybacked bigend bearing i bethappens all the time one half of the bearing slides under the other half and instant locked engine
I tune the oldschool way fear on the passengers face and knuckle colour cant go wrong
tabbacco is still my favorite vegetable
Yeah probably was a bearing, oh well im trying to get rid of it for 350 if not ill strip itits a bit of a shame to
how many k's were on it?
Thanks for the offer man, but dont have the time atm, maybe if the rego was a little longer it would warrent me taking days off work etc
thats what a harmonic balancer does sound like when it shits itself.
I bought this car got it home and fired it up. Next thing you know the worst knocking sound like it had done a rod or something terminal like that.
As I was getting into removing the engine. I wiggled the harmonic balancer back and forth only to find my drama was cheaper than I thought.
Just check it out mate. Make sure you remove the belt to check it.
Cheers for that mate but i just got rid of it, sick of seeing it in my front yard. Could have been just that should have a had a proper look but it didnt seem like it was the balancer, it had been knocking for a while
