Default My VN is chewing petrol like no tomorrow.

It has a standard 40 or maybe 50ltr tank. Filled it up and petty was pretty much all gone in 2 days! Went through 3 quaters of a tank in that time just cruising around town. I checked for leaks none. It couldnt have been rauted since it was in the garage. So i have no clue why its going through so much petrol. Its starting to bother me filling the bastard up all the time! Any solutions?

Start making a record of kms traveled and how many litres used so you have some evidence of fuel usage.

Its a 63L tank, and "cruising around town" and "gone in 2 days" doesnt help us work out how bad your economy is....

How hard are you driving it you know are you flogging it at the lights or taking it easy? A VN should go at least 450 to 500km on a tank around town. If your not giving it a hard time I'd suggest trying a new oxygen sensor and/or engine ECU temp sensor.
Can you remove the spark plugs and let us know what colour the centre electrode/insulator is?

Yeah mate as already said we need a bit more info. Next time you fill up with petrol fill it up all the way to the top until the pump clicks, reset your tripmeter and then when you fill up again next time fill it all the way to the top again until the pump clicks, and take note of how many litres your car filled up and also how many kms its travelled since the last fill up. Here's a little calculation that will tell you the fuel economy your getting- say if you got 300 kms and used 45 litres of fuel, in your calculator write 100 divided by 300 and then multiply that by 45 and you'll get 15. That means your getting 15 litres per 100kms. As long as you fill up to the very top of your fuel tank each time this calculation should be pretty accurate. Also did this bad fuel economy just come out of nowhere or has it gradually been getting worse? And does the car feel at all like its lost any power? Any extra info you can tell us would help mate

The metre's arent working unfortunitly If someone can help me with details about fixing that i can see how many k's i get. I generally take it easy around. After all cops tend to target Commodore's and P Platers. Sorry im not the most knowleadgeable car person where will i find the sparkys? Yeah she's due for a service in the next 4000 clicks. So i might do that before tinkering around with things i have no clue about.

Take out the spark plugs an dif the centre electrode is eroded or covered in crap get some new ones then look at your air cleaner element if it's dirty go and get a new one, the gereric nes from super Cheap are fine. Then change your fuel filter. Refil it and check your economy if it has improved all well and good. If it hasn't go and buy an AC Delco Oxygen sensor and replace that the last one I got was about $50 from Holden. If that doesn't fix it then there is something more serious wrong with it like bad compression.

Same issue with my VN, i usually get 300-50kms before the needle touchs empty but i think the sender is screwed because when i refil it only fills up say 40 litres.

I've got a mate checking out my injectors as he reckons they are loose and i've got a feeling there is a bit of unburnt fuel going through the exhaust.

Oxy has been replaced and the spark plugs are new NGK plugs. if your saying that your only filling up 40-50 litres it could be your sender.

If anyone could confirm this it would be great as mine is due for a service..now/when i get the money.. Damn rego due

Actually i just remembered the car is running on 5 cylinders. The fuel injector isnt working. Could that be another part to the problem? Mine also only fills it 40-50ltrs aswell. Needle has never touched "F" got as high as just over the line between Full and 3/4.

Nah, can't think of any way a dead cylinder might affect your economy...

Yeah mate vn's had overdrive, the vn transmission is basicly the same as your vs commy, just vn's weren't electronic and have a kickdown cable, where as vr and vs models dont have a kickdown cable

Well ive cut down on my driving for now until i find more work. But last night however i did let it loose poppin' bangerz in front of a few people's house's who are going to be smashed. But i think i may add some premium in her today. Also, with driving. Which Drive is best to use? The standard 'D' or the 'D' with the square around it? Ive been using the standard one...

hey mate it depends on how fast your driving. if your just cruising around town below 65-70 km/h then you can leave it in standard D, but over 70 you should put it up to the D with the square around it. i just leave mine on the D with the square all the time personally. if you have been driving alot over 70 km/h with it only in normal D than thats probably why your fuel consumption is shithouse, cos the normal D only lets the car shift up to 3rd gear, while the D with the square around it lets it shift to 4th.

the blue D is known as overdrive its like a extra gear and suitable for highway use, i still use it all the time where ever i go... occasionally i chuck it in the normal D
