The ADR states that it must be 90dB or below, some states also say that you must retain the same configuration as factory, IE if it came with 2 mufflers, it must have 2 mufflers. That can be down to interpretation though, as the ADR just states "Noise Reduction System". As long as it meets the noise level then it is legal.

Having said that though, most people on here wouldn't have a legal exhaust system. It's one of those things that is up to the discretion of the copper who pulls you over.

If its not street legal just switch the car off and roll to a stop :P Then wait for cops to go before starting her again. Just pretend to be on the phone or something..

Hahaha Choice... I Rebolted My Exhaust On Yesterday But Forgot To Tighten The Bolts Tightly. Fell Off On The Freeway At 140km/h . But I Noticed My Car Ain't Any Louder With No Exhaust Than It Is With Catback (Just Seems To Sound Smoother) So I Don't Think It Would Fall Under The Legal Noise Level. So havavb's Advice Will Be Working For Me For Now :P

Hey mate, with the number of mufflers being the same as factory law, do hotdog mufflers count?? Reason I ask is because I have 2 hotdogs where my middle mufflers used to be, and a rear res.

I'm not really worried about volume, there's no way i could pass that with my system on a V8 lol, just if i have an accident and the insurance company looks at number of mufflers etc...

Yes, a hotdog counts. But then it is up the person doing the inspection whether or not he classifies it as a "muffler". But it is a resonator and that should count.

Insurance companies shouldn't check if the car is legal or not, only if the modifications contributed to the reason you are making a claim. EG, if you crashed into a car in front of you and your wheels locked up, but your tyres were below the legal limit, then they would probably knock you back. In that scenario, a modified exhaust couldn't possibly contribute to the crash, so they wouldn't even look at it.

Pretty much any aftermarket/sports systems will be over the limit. VN/VP's were very close to the 90DB limit from the factory.

Thanks mate, it seems like common sense, but you know what insurance companies can be like, they will try and do anything to knock your claim back...f***kers
