Hi there all

This is a simple one for all of you. Recently my battery warning light is on, and the battery has been replaced about 2 months ago.

Does this mean the alternator is faulty? or the regulator? or something else.

Regards,

Arty

how long has the light been on,if it has been on for more than a couple of days and the car still starts ok then it may be just the battery light globe circuit ,may just have an open circuit causing the light to come on

Make sur you have the stereo Pin then undo the battery negative terminal.
Use an 18mm spanner and loosen the belt at the tensioner and pull off, make sure you remember how it goes or draw a picture.
Pull the two alternator bolts out, think one is 10mm and the other 12mm.
Pull alternator forward and undo main battery wire and squeeze 2 pin plug release.
Put alternator on its pulley and then undo the two small screws/bolts on the little black regulator.
Check that the bushes are not sticky or too worn down. If they are replace the whiole regulator about $35 I think. If they are OK then you have a bigger problem see a Sparky.

Regards Guy.

With a multimeter on volts measure across the battery with engine not running you should read somewhere around 12 v dc .Get someone one to start the car and the volts should rise to around 14 v dc.....if it stays or drops below 12v alternator is not charging and you will soon have a flat battery if you do not fix the alternator soon.
If it does go to 14v with engine running and the light is still on chances are the alternator is charging and there is a fault in the warning light circuit.

I had a problem with my alternator on my v6 when the light would come and go ..turned out to be the regulator which cost $50 but it was easy to replace as all you had to do was take the alternator out and remove 2 screws at the back pull out the old one and put the new one back complete with new brushes.

i just read your post, i will say, that there is nothing much that can go wrong with the vn/vp alternator, it has a few moving parts, but nothing that can go easily

check your volt reg,
do as a previous member has stated. or cut to the chase, go and get a new volt reg, they are easy to put in, dont get replacement brushes, and put it back in, cause the volt reg will still be faulty.
word of warning how ever, make sure you put the volt reg in the exact reverse of removal, if you dont get the brushes on the comutator (the brass thing it sits' on) it wont make a good contact, it will create a bigger spark, and eventualy just blow the guts out of the comutator, which cant be replaced without specialised tools

Thanks guys and girl for your help.

The motor when running the battery only runs at 12v so I will change the regulator and see how it goes...

Arty
