My son and i are interested in setting up his vp V6 manual for track days and club events , supposedly we will both use it ( guess whos funding) it will still use it as a daily driver so more interested in handling and reliability than major hp at this stage and would appreciate any advice .
Think long and hard about using it as a track car. I have a friend who rolled his 180sx three times at a track day, he is lucky to be alive (had a passenger been sitting in that car, they would have probably been killed). He went all out with his new 180, and as such, it cannot be road registered due to the roll cage he put in (CAMS approved). It is hard to have it both ways.
As for your handling questions though, it depends on what your budget is. You could go all-out and get coilovers (although I'm not sure about the choice or availability of these, or if they even have decent ones for Commodores), or adjustable dampeners with lowered springs. Swaybar links and swaybars are a good place to start. Wheels with at least 7 inches of rubber across them (the more the better). Replacing all of the suspension bushes is also a good place to start to firm the car up too.
Thanks for the advice on all counts , as you stated i am not interested in going over the top more interested in handling , safety and learning car craft , hence here looking for advice. All welcome and taken onboard.
Generally agree with RJK... I have had excellent personal experience with bilstein springs and shocks all round in my VP SS. They do have a coilover setup to suit VB-VP however I just elected to run a standard strut with an adjustable strut top. Dial in as much neg camber you can get out of the thing.
There are cheaper alternatives but you generally get what you pay for. I'm not a fan of anything from Pedders - you get the premium price but IMO it's not a premium product.

well id suggest doing something to the cooling system, even if its just ensuring its all fine, no leaks etc.
Then just run some good oil, and if you cqan be bothered some basic engine mods like air filter, cai, zaust.
A LSD would probly be better for the track if it doesnt have one already.
go over the car, tighten everything, i mean everything, panhard rod bolts, shock bolts, sway bar bushes get noelthane ones, try a twin rear swaybar setup thats cheap and very effective, lsd, transmission cooler, sports steering wheel will help, pod with enclosure and CAI, exhaust, even if you cut it off and weld a bit on coming out at the diff or the side, slicks, or a 16-17inch wheels will help ALOT, my 17s made my car corner, acclerate, and brake better and i had yokohamas all round when i had stockies, my 17s have potenzas on the back and cheapos on the front, decent tyres, just anythingthat you can think of, shift light will help, oil pressure gauges, coolant temps, remember your pushing the car to its limits
Really appreciate all the help , never had much to do with computers and was refered to this site (glad i was).Great to hear from genuine people who wish to help. Everything being taken on board thanks to all.
no problems mate, and i go on street commodores from time to time but this site seems full of more like minded down to earth people, street commodores is more hot heads, and POST PICS of the car when its track ready or while your working on it,looooove pics
Will do but pics will be juniors job .
Welcome,
No one has mentioned brakes yet.
Upgrading the brakes would have to be one of the best modifications one can do when putting a car through its passes at the track. Not only will it be safer, it will make him faster by enabling him to lean on the brakes later and in turn shaving precious lap time.
Alot of what VNV6 said is warranted, the little things that will protect/save the running gear would also be high up on the list i.e. Trans cooler (just ask Immortality), because, without sounding rude, it is a VP V6 so it is never going to be a bullet, so making sure it lasts as long as possible is a good idea.
I would also advise talking to Delcowizid about a tune, of any mod that can be done, one of his (or foamys) tunes are the most noticeable and best "Bang for buck" option.
Good luck, don't for get to keep us updated.
Ben
