Hi everyone, the mechanic has told me that the diff center is stuffed (makes noise but still runs okay) I have another vehicle as a donor, is it difficult to change the center or is it easier to change the whole diff (axle to axle)?
If I replace just the center, will one bolt straight in or will it need to be shimmed/adjusted to suit?
Yes, the diff does make enough noise to justify doing this...
The vehicle is a 92 exec sedan auto V6
Is there a how-to on changing either of these?
Thanx...

I would change the whole rear end its easier, personal I would take diff centers to a diff place if i got them changed. Belive me I do EVERYTHING i can myself but i dont have the skill or knowledge for that.

Yeah, you won't have the tools to do the centre swap yourself even if you had the know how to shim it up good.
I have similar stuff going on, in east of melbourne I have a quote for 3.45 gears & LSD added with re-race & seals for $950.
If you are after the cheapest option and have that donor then yeah, swap over Mr Axle as a unit. What are the brake discs like on the donor?

I'm pretty sure they're okay, worst comes to worst I'll put the originals back on.
Has anyone else c/o their diff? what bolts and how many? Replace bushes and etc?
I want to put lower springs in too, obviously this would be a good time for that...

How do you know what I have got in my shed??? Have you been looking again? What do you think I need?Yeah, you won't have the tools to do the centre swap yourself even if you had the know how to shim it up good.
i have a reasonable range of tools, but no experience in this case...![]()

WHAT? I'm lost reading that.if you change jsut the cnetre, you have to get it re shimmed ect, up to youif you want to pay someone, but id open the old one up, see wht condish it is, and if the donor one is better swap it whle
Yes, Unless you can set the tolerences and re-shim it, Just swap it over as a whole, With 2 people itl take 6 hours tops..... Ive helped with one or 2 :P
If you just being stupid and welding the center ( youll **** ya diff any way ) dont bother, Rip it out weld it, Throw it back in as it came out.
Give it hell, Snap axle stuff spline etc
Then just swap whole unit out.
My left rear back wheel makes noise if i put my foot down when going at a slow speed (30<kph i think). Is that the diff?
I pulled out my minni spool and chucked an LSD center in, just swaped the crown wheels and used the shimps i pulled out ot the ute that head the LSD in it. was alot of work not to hard and it has worked fine since.
Okay, thanx everyone for your advice!
Gonna c/o the whole diff...
Hopefully it wont rain too much!
