hey,
i recently sold my VT wagon and have down graded to my old VP sedan.
in the last two years we have replaced fuel filter, radiator, battery, fuses, water pump, alternator, coils, plugs, oil filters an oil etc
over the last month it has gotten lazy, struggles with start an stop driving, hates driving under load, so changed plugs an all came good..
then today it felt asthough it was going to cut out but instead let off a massive backfire doing 110kms on highway. it basically kicked into limp home mode for the next 20kms but didnt miss a beat just felt asthough was driving a 4cyl.. got it home only to hear a strange kind of hissing/grinding noise when i got out to open gate.. left it running in garage an popped bonnet only to discover what appears to be tranny fluid all over the passanger side of the engine and seemed to be leaking from rad cooler pipes and there was a watery brown drip from near sump.. have tightened up cooler pipes an put new clamps on hoses...
HOWEVER.. back in december i hit a roo on our road at about 100km an the bloody thing left a mass dint in the front bonnet smack in centre, smashed grill infront of radiator an the lights and there was gas leaving the radiator with a fair amount of pressure( assumed a/c gas??) radiator appears okay though so im stumped..
i have noticed theres brown crud in the radiator which was there in old radiator too so i guess its made its way into new radiator via the water pump or hoses??? an my water pump now appears to be struggling.. does a few normal cycles then theres a thud an a vibration through the pullies an so forth..
any idea's???
Simple solution ditch the VP for a VNCant go wrong there.
well it is looking like a option to burn it down the back paddock an buy another vt , however guy across road through it up on ramps an checked it all over.. seems my leak is gone for now since changed clips on hoses, the idle is smooth, now i just need to narrow down the knocking/ thud in the pulley's.. theres brown crap in radiator water which i assume is my fault since i used the original bolts again when i changed the water pump 2 yrs ago so will replace pump again an renew bolts, radiator has a small hole near top left corner from roo claws when it smashed through bonnet, so could i be looking at trans fluid leak in radiator aswell.. but with all these issues ive had no overheating what so ever :S i kinda hope i can save this car, with a lil work
heres the story, as we get older each day we start to slowly die so do cars full stop/![]()
oh beleive me i am with u on that theory mean vn, but problem solvedafter all the fiddling with things like coils, dfi, fuel system etc.. ended up being the fan belt was slightly cracked and well in the 2 years ive owned the car ive never changed it but who knows how long it'd been on there before i bought it. as for the radiator it is looking good after a flush an some new coolant drove it 100km this morning and didnt miss a beat, im one happy girl now
thanx anyways
glad it was all solved and running alot better for you
yeah, the previous owner selling it would have replaced everything by now with new stuff recently. they thought stuff this, what a piece of crap, i have to kepe replacing stuff and by the the time they got to the last thing to replace, its a new car and nothing will go wrong with it for another few years.
i can remember when VN's came out i was a first year apprentice, they had a recall list longer than the HQ holden. i was for ever fixing things on recalls, i can tell ya i got good at it.
the VN was holdens biggest mistake, they should have never put on that work experience lad who designed it without a university degree.
yeah ex had a vn calais 89, was dodgy as forever swapping fuses, fixing leaks and had a mind of its own electrically but mechanically we had no major issues at all over 3yrs. i dont think he even serviced it once an still got 1500 trade in back in 08.
ive owened 3vns and ive never had a problem with them apart from blowing trannies and defects due to putting stupid shit on them
okays so im back to no car.. it started playing up again.. took into to auto electrician who told me s2 vp's arent compatible with scan tools??? is this right???? anyways he thinks his apprentice stuffed up the instillation on the CAS god knows how, but anyways its back in the workshop for a 2nd attempt at the CAS fingers crossed.
A Tech 1 scantool can read the VN/VP ECU's and VP BCM modules. The mechanic probably doesnt have the proper type of scantool. Most newer scantools can only read OBD11 or CAN diagnostic systems, whereas the VP is OBD1 only.
Holden are usually the only ones that have the Tech 1 scantool. You might have to see them,or you can flash up any error codes yourself by bridging the diagnostic connector with a piece of wire which flashes up codes on the engine light on the dash.Heres a link to a thread that shows a couple of pics and explains how to do this test.---Checking your Computer for Faults (VN - VP)---
