    Default power steering question!?!

on my 5litre vn the rubber boot on the left side of the motor is leaking pretty quickly will take it a night of dripping to empty all the fluid.

just wondering can i just replace the boot thing or will i have to replace the whole power steering?i don't have a clue about this stuff so any help is good cheers.

Mate replacing the boot will do exactly nothing. Best bet is to get a 2nd hand unit off the for sale forum here or visit the wreckers or if your real fussy get a reco unit from somewhere. IMHO they all leak a tiny bit but if it's bad replace it.

damn was hoping i wouldn't have to are you sure that replacing the boot where it is only leaking wouldn't fix it?...would you have any idea how much a vn steering rack would cost these days??

Replacing the boot won't do anything, you'll just fill it up with fluid and it will be swishing around inside and leak anyway because it won't be an airtight seal. I did a friends VN rack the other day. Picked up a rack off ebay for 20 bucks and it's a good one. Real steal. A reco rack fitted by a mechanic would be about $450-$500. The tie rod ends might need replacing too and you'll likely need a wheel alignment too. If you can't fit one yourself that's what your looking at.

oil is getting in the boots for some reason, reason being stuffed internal rack seals. rack is trash.
either overhaul the rack yourself or get a recon or second hand unit.

Mate at that price you'd be mad not to get it done. Obviously you're not particularly experienced doing your own work and the power steering is not the place to start.

That's a good price. Reco racks are 200 bucks plus so fitted for 200 is pretty cheap. If he does it properly. I had a lube mobile guy come around recently and he was a 20 year old that didn't have the right tools. I wonder who these mob are hiring, but I told him to go. On his green P plates.
