okay ladies, i want to cam my vn, i know how to line up the cam ect but ive read the advancing/retarding cam timing gives you more power high/low, clear this up for me anyone? and how do i access timing chain on my vn? cause i want to fiddle with it and see if i like it with downlow power or high rev, will it make much difference?
if you really want do try it, you need more top end and less bottom end on a VN.
take timing cover off is not too hard and not too easy. you do NOT need to take the sump off, dont let nyone tell you other wise. you just need to undo a few of the sump bolts either side to give it a bit of flex and go from there.
take harmonic balancer off, no need to take water pump off, take other bolts out that attach timing cover to block, theres 2 that go into water jacket it hink, make sure sealant is put on these when reinstalling.
undo power steering high pressure hose and bend tab out the way to remove the metal pipe that goes into the timing cover, undo the small water hose, undo sump bolts holding timing cover on and **CAREFULLLY** wiggle it off side to side gently keeping it square until its clear of everything, keeping an eye on the sump gasket to make sure it stays on the sump and not breaks off with timing cover.
thats about it, maybe a couple things i havent said, youll see when you do it.
now retarding one tooth is a fair bit, tell me how it goes if you do it. in my opinion its not worth it, get a cam and put in it if you want to stuff around with cam timing. youll need to play with memcal as well if you change things too much else it wont run effeciently.
on reassembly, thoroughly clean the sump and rubber sump gasket and put a bit of GOOD sealant in the corner ONLY about 5mm on both sides where the sump meets the block corner underneath the gasket, so between the sump and gasket, and superglue the front part of the sump gasket to the sump, yes superglue. and make sure its pushed down nice and tight else youll never get the cover back on.
place the timing cover gasket on with some permatex and some GOOD sealant at the bottom corners of the sump and block intersection andput some GOOOD sealant on the upper part of the sump gasket and some on the bottom of the timing cover and carefully and squarely slide it back on being careful that it slides over the sump gasket and does not dislodge the sump gasket from the sump.
Start putting bolts back in loosely in the sump and cover and dont tighten anything until all bolts for the cover are in.
