There is one particular large car part (aftermarket) franchise that I try to avoid shopping from, and today I just got another reason to stay out of there shop. I wont go naming names, but lets say it starts with a "A" and ends in utobarn.
dropped in to ask about a price on cruise control units, installed because im lazy and not good with wires. I told them i wanted it put onto a original vp button cluster (which i would provide) and not have an extra after market stalk.
After 40 ****ing minutes of them discussing this, calling the suppliers, talking to the manager, piss farting around wasting my time, she finally tells me the unit would be $587 plus $56 for a clutch switch, plus $200 odd for installation, so over $800 to have cruise on me ute......
someone please tell me that i was right in thinking this was a load of bs and walking out, how much should i be looking, better yet, if i buy a second hand module, how hard would it be for me to do myself? i have a multimeter and could get someone good with wiring skills to help me, what kind of costs should i be looking at?
i asked said A a few months back for a friends car. was the same cost, and i get a discount cause they like me. u could pic one up from a wreckers. only thing is im not sure about the wiring side of it. would have to have a look in the wreckers u might be able to find the wiring so u can just plug it in.
You'd be better off talking to a tech from one of the alarm companies, you should be able to get contact details from a used car dealer and talk to the fitter direct. If you can get onto the right bloke you might be able to get the job done "on the side" as they say for a lot less. Just don't go calling the supplier and ask to talk to a fitter who's up for a cash job.
The factory unit is a good option if you can get all the bits, start by looking at your service manual wiring diagram and see what's needed. I'm guessing that all the wiring would already be installed and that you'd just need to take the harness attached to the unit, I'm pretty sure they were a dealer fit option.

Mate it really isnt that hard I bought the bits off E bay (cluster switch, module,) for 25 bucks got the drawing off here. I could not get a loom so I made one (its just 7 or so wires of differant colour) and the switch for 8 bucks at repco and the plug for the module from green88 10 bucks + postage. 3 hours of getting my head around it (with beer) and 3 hours to fit it. I have a spare V6 module and can help over E mail or plenty of people on here will help. 1 of the best guys on here for advice about cruise/ level3 conversions is green88
thanks, I think I will be doing it myself.
Are the modules different auto/manual v6/v8? or is it just different looms?
I'll be putting some VN Cruise looms on Ebay very soon.

the diff is the manual has an extra kill switch for the clutch peddle proble runs off the same circuit as the brake one.
yeah i figured the clutch switch was going to be simply running off the same circuit, easy to add/remove as needed. what about v6/v8 same or different?
vn/p/r/s manuals were never fitted factory with cruise control but its just a matter of taking brown wire out of terminal of brake switch... running it to a clutch switch and running wire back to the brake switch terminal you took the wire out of. ....v8s had the actuator motor mounted under the bonnet in different position to v6s...i think the actuator motor is the same just the cable going from it to the throttle body is different everything else in the cruise control is the same.

Just hijacking the thread quickly are you supposed to drill the 20mm hole from inside or outside the car to feed the cruise loom through or is there a cheats way to just use the clutch cable grommet or simliar to run the loom through (still haven't gotten around to doing this step, have installed the module and have just clipped the wiring behind the airbox) ?
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
The loom can fit though in several places - my VN already had a hole by the main loom firewall plug.
If you pull all the carpet and sound deadner back you will see plenty of places to cut a hole.
