16inch thermo will not cool it. It has been tried and failed many a time by various members on this forum and people i know. I have personally gone AU twin thermo's, They work awsomely but they are physically to big and difficult to fit.
If you have any doubts take 5 min to fit your old clutch fan and you will prob find it will cool fine.

If the clutch fan didnt do it either then thats probably stuffed too. By all assumptions it seems you have checked everything to ensure the cooling system is fine. So i would say use a duel 12" thermo and that would keep it cool. If you wanna stuff about though the AU's are a gaunteed work but they require a bit of cutting to fit.

AU thermos not that good of a fit

Heres a thread on the au's i did a while ago. How the bloke on the second page recon's he installed these on 30min i'll never know. Took me that long to cut all the old nobs and mounting points of the fan, let alone start to do any meausurements, marking, moving battery and charcoal canister.

The first thing to do is definitely to bleed the system properly. Turn the heater onto full hot, leave the cap off the radiator, make sure the overflow bottle is up to the line and run the motor for 10 min while squeezing rad hose top and bottom until there has been no air bubbles coming out of rad for a few minutes. As far as cooling fans go either use the original and the shroud or make a new shroud to take the electric fans or use ford mondeo twin fans from the wreckers. The original fan and shroud should work perfectly well, you probably swapped out problems when you installed the new rad and lost the original fan and shroud. Must have shroud for coolingness.
