hey guys i will be putting a 304 5L out of a VP commodore into my HJ premier over the next few weeks i was just wondering what i would have to do to get it legally on the road in WA
in regards to emissions, engineering cert etc etc any help would be appreciated
thanks in advance
It shouldnt be a problem to register, as the HJ was originally released with a V8 engine as an option, and the newer engine you want to fit will run a lot cleaner than the original HJ V8,so emissions shouldnt be a problem either.Im in NSW,so it might be different where you are, but here in NSW I know of a guy who does conversions putting the later model commodore V6's and V8's into older holdens like HQ's etc.He also sells the kits to DIY.There arent any problems registering these converted cars, like there no engineers certificate needed etc.A bloke I met had a V6 fitted to a HZ sedan using one of these kits, and he said he just had to change the engine number for the car at the RTA and that was it.My understanding is that you only need an engineers certificate when you fit larger engines that were never an option in that vehicle, like when fitting a V6 engine into a car that was only made with a four cylinder engine.
As long as the engine is later than the year model of the recieving car and you run full emission controls you should be fine (the only other rule is power to weight ratio increase limit but with a Efi 5L you will be fine).

thanks for clarifying that guys, i thought that was the case just wasn't 100%
It's a bit of a grey area really and depends on who is looking at the car on the day. I had no dramas getting mine registered without an engineers, however I've heard of quiet a few people being sent to get an engineers report when they fronted up for rego.
