Hey guys and gals,
I've got a vp commy, just changed over the strut towers...(getting a defect cleared)...having an issue with a bolt not doing up. It is the bolt on the lower control arm (think that's what it's called). That main big bolt that attaches to the underside of the strut itself is just spinning when I try to tighten the nut up, and from what I can see underneath there is no way of holding the bolt still to tighten the nut up...is this bolt meant to spin or has it broken somehow?
Am i going to have to hit up the wreckers and get a new control arm or is there a way of keeping the bolt still to tighten the nut?
Cheers Dallascowboy
haha lol no it hasent broken this is why you really need to get this stuff done at a qualified mechanic's shop
the problem is it is a taperd interfirence fit with a locking nut i dont know how you got it out of the taper to start with but it might need a shop powerd rattle gun not that super shit stuff
ps i think you meant strut tops not towers
Sounds like your refering to the lower ball joint (yes it is supposed to spin, the strut pivots on this joint) , try jacking the suspension up under the lower control arm to put pressure on the joint as it is a press fit.. or could wait till its back on the ground to torque it up
Power is measured in DECIBEL
Me am agreeing, jack up wishbone to put taper back in place and it'll tighten up goodly.

cheers guys will get onto it....didnt take it to mechanic cause im a full time uni student so need to save money where ever i can!
cheers for the help

line the taper up as straight as possible and strike it underneath with a hammer. It will force the taper in so it grips and you can turn the nut.
Hit me up with some reputation points if i've helped you out! (Star in the bottom left!) Cheers!
