    Default T5/cluch problem???

ok, yesterday i heard a considerably load 'snap!' come from the gearbox/clutch area... scared the hell out of me! lol. now ive got the sound of something spinning, closely followed by a grinding noise. all these noises happen while the foot is off the clutch pedel and once my foot is back on it, even just lightly, it stops..... can anybody help me out?? there arnt any other obvious problems. T5 shifts fine and the clutch doesnt seem to slipping... wat the hell is going on?

Nah the first thing I would check as this happened to me is the return spring on the pedal under the dash there is a how to on here some where 5 dollar part before you start pulling gearboxs out

How would that cause a grinding noise? If the thrust bearing is badly damaged it could be working away on the clutch fork by now, best not to cause any more damage by putting it off

edit: just get under the car and see if there is excessive play in the fork, that will tell you

mine was the same a rattle and grinding sitting at idle but if I just touched the clutch or put my foot under the pedal and lifted it up the noise went away replaced the spring and all good again

Plus one for this, just check it stan. But most the time you will see part of the spring laying in the footwell. If it is this theres no problem driving it around, I replaced mine in the V6 only to have to break about a year later again so ive just left it...

If you need somewhere to take your gearbox out come for a roadtrip

ok just checked the footwell and no broken spring lol, but, i did have a feel up the back of the pedel and i could feel a spring thats obviosly broken so that probably was the loud snapping sound i heard... but i still cant see how that spring can cause all those noises though. now, the spinning and grinding noise has actually stopped so im not freaking out as much but i think i mite take a peek underneth on the weekend. Cheers for everyones help and Mischa, i'll hold u to that

i had a simialr noise and here are the results

mind you circle work in third gear was the main cause

but normally it means either the cable has snapped ot the thrust race has shit itself

If the take up point and feeling of the clutch hasnt changed the thrust bearing collapse or wearing out probably isnt a cause.
My guess is the clutch return spring(actually preload spring) which pushes the throwout bearing against the pressure plate fingers when you have your foot off the clutch maintaining constant pressure...so when it breaks the throwout bearing then just skims the fingers touching them now and again ...creating a noise sometimes the noise dissappears but that is just a random thing where the throw bearing has stopped after you take your foot off the clutch. Give away is that you can pull the clutch pedal up towards you and it will just sit there and not spring back to the contact point when you let it go.

It was impossible to get the spring on how they say to so I put it on a different way so it still worked but wasnt nearly as tight.
