Over the last three days there has been a really tinny knocking noise. It sounds like its coming from right above the T5 gearbox. The noise is most present when you let off the accelerator, however i Think i hear it when i go over bumps sometimes.
I though originally that it could either be a cover on the gearbox, or an exhaust bolt loose, or the exhast its self knocking slighty on something, but i had the car up on the hoist today and cant find anything loose and exhaust feels solid.
Im fresh outta ideas, and would really like to work it out so i can fix it!
i had may be some thing similar - we found the end T5 rubber mount just before the drive shaft starts was worn out, would make knocking sounds at all weird times......replace and sound went
Also could be the clutch fork, they have little rubbers on them where the two fingers the press against the thrust bearing and when they break away the yolk is able to move up and down on bumps and rattle ect.
yeah same problem with mine, clutch fork rubbers, replaced em and now she purrs :P
Mmm interesting... so to chnage these rubbers is it a gearbox outta sorta thing?
do you replace just the rubbers or the entire fork?
can i do any major damage leaving it for another week or so?
I had a look at a mates thrust bearing today that he had in his shed from a wrecked vn. and it has four plastic groove parts. He said possibly one of them is broken so the bearing is rattling around?
Apparently i can jack it up take the inspection plate off and check it all out? is that the case on the vn t5?
No unfortunately there is no inspection cover, but you may be able to see a bit if you shine a torch through the fork hole, at minimum you can give the fork a wiggle and see if it feels loose on the bearing.
Im sure with enough patience and a hell of a lot of buggering around you could probably replace the orings without gearbox removal, maybe with some super long long nose pliers but i would just slide it back and whip some new ones in. And no you wont damage it driving around with buggered ones. it would just wear the plastic on the thrust bearing a little fast most likely, nothing to worry about.
Dam no inspection plate. When the car was up on the hoist last saturday i checked the fork and it felt rather loose. My tafe teacher checked it and said that doesnt seem right. so im thinking it must be something to do with the fork.
So the fault isnt the thrust bearing itself, its the orings on the clutch fork? has anyone got a picture or a link that what they are?
I think ill probably drop the box out just to make things easier.
Would it help if it took a video of the noise? just to illustrate more what it is?
Thanks for your help everyone![]()
Ok the noise is getting worse like appearing more and more, and its rattling heaps faster. Im gonna jack the car up and have a good look around at the clutch fork. i had a look in my repair manual for the vn and cant find anything on the clutch fork. i was hoping for a diagram of it so i could see these rubbers or something. anybody got any more advice?
yank the gearbox out. It's not that hard... check everything is good

heres a video of what its doing. hopefully this will narrow it down a bit more.
Gearbox will be comming out in the next few days.
It has to theres no other way, i just wanna know what i should be looking for when its out.
So far ive thought of the following:
the fingers on the pressure plate are damaged
Thrust bearing damaged
then as stated on here:
Clutch fork rubbers
orings?
ive also been told theres a bush or something inside the clucth/flywheel asembly that can rattle aorund if not installed correctly.

anyone????
Don't worry too much, it should be reasonably obvious when you are looking at it - run the thrust bearing back and forth on the slide using the fork with the gearbox on the bench and you'll see where the problem lies.
sounds like thrust bearing or pressure plate fingers are damaged. If the thrust bearing seizes it could just be spinning round. But as said, once it comes off you will see. Probably worth buying a new clutch kit

Thanks for your help guys, Im pulling the box out wednesday morning, so ill check it all out. whats a good price to pay on a clutch kit theres a fair few on ebay from $200-$300.
Also if i find it is the thrust bearing and that the pressure plate and clutch plate still have plently of life is it ok just to change the bearing?
Its hard to see whether there's life in the clutch plates without completely removing them, but if its just the thrust bearing gone then it should be OK to replace just that if the clutch was working well before
