Sounds like the solenoid located under the plastic scuttle piece in between the engine bay and windscreen, there's a half-dome on the passenger side with 2 screws holding it down, under that there is a square looking solenoid with a lead connected to it, go to the wreckers and take one out from a similar car (VN-VS) and replace it with yours, happened to 2 of my cars in the past, changed that over and it's all fixed.

hey mate, just asking about the resistor you got, can you tell me which model you got it from? is that the cage thing under the windscreen that you got? holden here told me the new ones don't work in the vn's and tried selling me an expensive "rare" vn one cos that's all that will work in it.

If it is a standard heater/airconditioning setup (ie, not climate control), then that is rubbish. It is merely a switchable resistor block. The original VN resistor blocks used coiled resistance wire in a cage (which were prone to breakage through vibration), whereas the latter ones have the resistors embedded on a heatsink. They are interchangeable (or at least on my old VN, as a latter type worked perfectly when I had to change mine).
