Hey guys,
Bought a new VP yesterday and i noticed when i press in the brake the lights on the cluster turn on. When i let go of the brake pedal they then turn off.
Dont know where to start with this, anyone know whats going on?
Thanks, Terry.
The VN and VP have more globes in the rear cluster than any other model I can think of. It's pretty but if the globe holders get corroded you can get weird symptoms because of current backflow. ie an earth is dodgy so a globe has to earth through another globe instead and they both light up. The loom involved is easy to get at and short but you may have problems tracking down a replacement at the wreckers that is working properly. Pull both rh and lh looms (they are only about 20 cm long) pull the globes and look with a torch for corrosion where the wire joins the globe holder metal frame. It's not real easy. The stupid metal frames inside the globe holders weren't designed to come out easily, you have to drill the plastic to get them out. With a drill and a soldering iron and some spare wire you can fix it permanently but it's not the easiest job in the world. You should probably call Rare Spares or Electric Life to see if they are available new.
Just called rare Spares, they have them. Couldn't give me a price on the spot 'cos of saturdayness shouldn't be more than 20 bucks a side or so.

yeah mate mine did that aswell i got all my looms replaced and fitted for 80 dollars from auto elec and now it doesnt happen anymore so like warranty void said replace em
thanks for the help guys, ill look into it asap.
take out the brake light globes and see if it stops the dash lights coming on. I am betting some one has stuck a single fillament/single contact on the back globe into a stop/tail light socket so the single pin on the back on the back of the globe is shorting the brake to parking light contacts.
If the contacts in the socket are corroded just spray with WD40 and give them a clean with an old tooth brush and refit the correct type of globes.
Alright ill give that a shot now. im hoping that's the problem because i really don't want to be changing looms and what not. It might be the globes because i saw some old ones in the boot just sitting there. The guy i got the VP off might have got the wrong ones.
Crossing my fingers
WD40 and a toothbrush ain't gonna do shit. (IMHO)
The corrosion is not on the contacts it's between the metal frame and the wiring, you can't get at it without drilling the plastic holder to release it.
You can tell if it's the wrong globe by looking at the number of filaments and the number of wires to the holder. Single filament = 2 wires. Double filament = 3 wires.
You can piss about with WD40 and globes all day, for a result you need to replace the loom ends.
(This is a piece of piss, the looms are easy to get at and they just unplug, they are about 20 cm long and 20 bucks each. Don't get all worked up just 'cos it's called a loom)
