Give reasons, I honestly don't know the difference between the two accept the S1 is a buick which is what I have. Discuss (:

S1 is better from a standing start but anyone who has had to replace a thermostat in an S1 engine would probably forgo the little bit of extra oomph off the line for the ease of changing a front mounted thermostat on an S2 engine
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?

the engine in my VR is an S2 bottom end with (modified) S1 VN heads. There are a couple of minor differences between the two different engines, S1 has different coolant passages and there is a bit more meat around the ports to grind away. PCV system is different also. The injectors on the S2 fire in two sets of 3, instead of all at once like on the S1 (not that it matters, given the speed they operate at).

There isnt really much that makes one engine hugely better than the other, though.

I like the aluminium rocker covers on the early S1.

agree with crazyspoon, if you need to change the thermostat, Series II is the go. 2 mins vs 2 hours

My VN Calais had a S1 engine, it had a awesome take off. But it was slightly harder to find parts to suit a S1 engine.
I now own a VP with a S2 which has a poor take off but great mid range.
If i could change my engine it would be a S1.

    Great responses.
My VN S1 has 216xxxKMs on it and the take off is still unbelievable, and even 6,000RPM is insane (:

And what about to modify? If you had the opportunity to put ultra light rockers, throttle bodies, ect ect which engine would you rather do it too? Which engine do you think you would get most out of with modding?

Nah manifold will still fit, the t/stat will be at the wrong end (but still work) and you will probably want to block off the PCV pipe at the manifold end. It is blocked off anyway, but blocking up the other end will stop it filling with grease and crap.

Yella terra make roller rockers for the S1 and S2 buicks - Make sure you get the right set though as the stud size is different and they dont interchange.

Wtf, you said you dont know the difference between the two. Surely knowing what parts are interchangable is going to give you an idea of thew differences between them.

Im going to say VR engine apparently had supercharged rods from the U.S and higher compression (9.0:1 instead of 8.5:1).....

And with series 2's it's easier to change a thermostat and plugs on the drivers side.

Yes you can, you just need to invent a new PCV breather system. I just drilled a hole in my oil cap and screwed a filter into it.
