    Default IRS statesman clunking underneath

wen i engage in gear my car makes a loud cluncking noise and it does it wen i take my foot off the accelerator as well, could this be the uni joints or the diff. if it is the diff how much would a IRS LSD diff cost?

i get the same problem. My uni joint is worn and when you shift into gear from park, you hear a clunk sound. When driving on the motorway, you let go of the accellerator and you can hear a knock sound, put your foot back on and you hear a knock sound again.
I am gonna look into how much a uni joint costs or tailshaft combo for that matter,.

the tailshafts have a centre bearing in them, get under neith the vehicle and move the tail shaft bearing up and down. does the noise sound like a thud or a ting?.
also, when you take off from a set of traffic lights does your vehicle have a vibration under acceleration?

This can also be caused by engine mounts sagged or worn, suspension bushes too should be checked. Excessive lash in diff is a possibility. Universal will usually have a rotating noise. Re-bearing the diff is around 550 - 650 in our area.

Clunking underneath can be lots of things, uni's, centre bearing, cracked IRS cradle, broken gearbox mount, or a little bit of all those. If you have a vibration in 3rd gear at 80-120 that's most likely the gearbox mount (I did finally cure that one and that's what it was)

its when you accelerate then back off you get the clunk and the sound comes from the rear end somewhere!

the clunk is the lash in the diff i think, and the tink is the center bearing/unis
