    Question VN Trans Service

I was wondering how hard a DIY trans service is? Mine's leaking a stupid amount of fluid

if you're talking auto, easy as, buy a service kit with filter and pan gasket and new trans fluid, take the car for a quick spin to get the fluid warm if it is cold, then put the car on ramps and axle stands to get the car as high as possible, put a big tray under the trans, loosen the pan retaining bolts working front to back, as u get more bolts out the seal will crack and fluid will begin to leak into the pan. Get as much fluid out of the pan before you take out the last few bolts, lower the pan out and put aside, let the trans drip for a while or you will wear the fluid, after say 10 mins wipe the valve body dry with a clean rag. while waiting clean up the pan and check that the mag plug isn't too bad, then clean off the old grime. Then pull out the old filter, you will prob need a torch and a scribe or sharp pick to pull out the old filter o-ring, once that is removed install the new filter and o-ring, re-install the pan with the new gasket, torque up the bolts in a criss-cross sequence working centre outwards then put in the trans fluid until it starts coming up the dipstick, then start the car and put in and out of gear (make sure the handbrake is on tight) and keep topping up the fluid until full.

hope that helps. its pretty easy to do, once you get practice and have the tools it should take no longer than a half hour.

I'd suggest getting a trans service done by a pro trans place, you'll get your diagnoses for free that way and can decide if it's something you can fix or not. If it's the seals or the torque converter you probably can't do it yourself. Doing your own trans service before knowing what the problem is is just a waste of time and money. Do you know where the fluid is coming from? If it's just a hose then great but if it's coming from the bellhousing area you are looking at taking the trans out to work on it.
