I am assuming you mean the VN. I would go the Series 2. Not as powerful as series 1 but easier to work on mainly due to the cooling system.
Welcome to the internet where people have opinions that you might not like

    First of all.

    Second.
Its the same motor, you're never going to acheive much without changing most of the things that effect which variant it is anyway.

Seeming as no one has seriously gone in depth without insulting you (Looks @ above. Please realize there are some people that don't have the same amount to do with cars as maybe you or I), I'll answer you.

The series one motor it the engine that I have and I absolutely love it. Some people say rough idol mine runs at 900-1000rpm and I can balance a coin on the motor, so I don't know what engine they are running!!!
The series one motor has alot more low end (Start off, take off, ect) torque. I recently ask the same question as you, and from the comments I got I learned this but I also went out and tried it myself. My mate has a S2 motor and it just (to me, IN MY OPINION PEOPLE) not the same driving experience, I especially noticed when i had to gear down (it was a manual) from 3rd to 2nd going around a round about attacking it at around 30-40km/h because the car started labouring the torque was just not there to get her through the corner.

On the other hand, the S2 does have good points as much as the S1 does, the S2 has more high end power, I think from memory it makes an extra 3-4KW/HP stock than the S1. I also have a feeling that the S2 would be able to achieve higher RPM than the S1, I don't know why it is just a feeling I have. I hear the S2 is a little bit better on fuel also, however I don't see how due to the lack of torque compared to the S1 and it works harder, but hey shit happens.

People complain so much about where the Thermostat is located on the Series One and that is one of their main reasons to get a Series Two motor. TO ME that is ridiculous, the location of a thermostat and the convenience it is to change it should NOT affect someones thought on a MOTOR, especially when you shouldn't really be having to change the thermostat very often!! I haven't changed mine once on my vn and it is 20 years old with over 200xxxkm's on it, so I don't know what you guys are doing to your engines, but mine rarely sits under 120 on the freeway so.

But my personal opinion is obviously going to be the S1! I love how I can over take someone from a gentle.. driving pacey cruise of 110KM/h (2,000RPM max), flog my foot to the floor, without hesitation raise to 5800RPM (car is chipped to a 6,200RPM limiter) and be thrown back in my seat.
Modifications are easily carried out by yourself as a backyard job, ect.
Go the Series One mate, and don't ever look back.

The 5 litres are one and the same motor in both series 1 & 2. Check out one of the many posts in v8 development about getting them to go. As for the other VN motors - They are good for basic transport only not worth bothering with for any meaningful power gains.

I think youll find its 6 of one, half a dozen of the other. Your opinion on which engine is better will vary largely depending in the state that the engine is in.

I would go with the S2 personally, just because they are easier to get parts for.

It's a fact that the S1 motor produces more low-end torque than the S2.

    Different cam profiles.

People are too obsessed with how much "power" their car makes....it doesn't make power, it produces torque, from which this mythical "power" figure is calculated.

But the poster is also comparing a chipped s1 against a ???? s2.

Hardly a good comparison, by any means

So true... I have experienced almost every model commodore and my advice is enjoy what you have stock (obviously do the cheap and easy mods, exhaust/extractors, chip, cai, etc) because it can become extremely expensive to mod an old motor that no doubt probably could do with a rebuild in the first place

I have a S1 motor at the ready to install into my 88 wagon. I love the S1 motor. With just a minor modded memcal it flies when needed and cruises @ 8-10 L/100 kms.

I also have a S2 VN Calais that has more top end - but the wagon kills it to the speed limit. So the top end power of the S2 is not needed.

If you want punch off the line to the speed limit - go the S1. If you want high revs go S2.
