Have had a fair ammount of play in the steering wheel since i got my car, but as i was going around a corner the other day the wheel skipped and is now cocked off to the right when the car is aimed straight.
Going around a few corners today there were a few clunking noises as the wheel would skip..
Would this be a job involving replacing the whole steering column or could it be something less or more major.
Cheers.
first i would check if the coupling from the colum to the rack is thight, sounds like its loose and jumping splines, think it a 13mm nut and bolt by memory.
I agree check the coupling, re align the steerign wheel if need be and tighten the nuts back up. They are lock nuts and if they tighten by hand they have lost their self locking function and need to be replaced with nylock nuts or use some loctite on them. It must be pretty loose for it to skip around like that though so I would get to it fast.
Alright cheers guys, will have a check tomorrow before work.
Its not skipping on every single movement but its skipping enough to be a worry
++ I dont want to be any more of a danger on the road.
crazy that its skipping, i had a VB commodore with NO nut on the steering wheel (used to be my dads, turned out he forgot to put it back on then put the horn back on, never knew) but anyway the splines are a ####ing tight fit and i didnt have any issues even without a nut because all the splines were good. Now dont go driving without one haha but maybe someone has put the wheel back on dodgy and flattered the splines causing them to slip? I dunno im sure it can just be a loose nut but as ive said ive gotten by without one without an issue if the splines are good
Was a loose intermittent shaft spline was effed and rack was loose, all good now but
