Howdy all
My starter motor is on it's way out, looked on EBay, etc but some of the starter motors listed say they don't fit VP V6 auto, some do, etc
Engine number (VP engine) is VH1246355 so would anybody be able to tell me if this is a Bosch or Delco Remy starter or I'm safe to buy one off Ebay, etc
Thanks in advance
If ignorance is bliss why aren't there more happy people around ?
my Vp had a bosch starter in it im pretty sure your the bosch one will go on yours.... just climb under your car you might be able to see what brand starter is already on it
AFAIK any Bosch for VN-VP, maybe VR are interchangeable. Then theres the two different types of Delco's, one for auto and one for manual. They look the same but the auto one has "NO SHIM" written on it.
My VN auto before converting it to manual had a Bosch. Mum had a VP auto that had the Delco. We eventually got rid of the VP and I kept a few bits including the starter motor which Im going to stick on my manual setup. I was running the manual Delco but seeing that my aftermarket flywheel still uses an auto flexplate as the ring gear it might suit it better. Occasionally when I would hit the key the starter motor would just scream and do nothing. Im pretty sure the difference between auto and manual Delco's is just the distance the gear extends. The gears are the same.
If youre still unsure, as said above stick your head under and check it out. They all mount up the same way besides the Bosch usually has an extra mounting bracket on the rear. Delcos dont because they arent as bulky lol. Then unless the flexplate dimensions changed over the years any auto one should be right.
Heres what the Bosch looks like:
And heres the Delco:

Thanks guys, it is a Bosch (looks like a pretty easy job to do)
Purchased a later model Bosch one on Ebay (no heat shield) but IIRC I need to get different bolts for it as the older ones like mine has had a different sized bolt
Anyone know what size they are or is it just easier to go to Pick-A-Part in the morning and grab some off a VR/VS ?

Different size bolts? Diameter or length? One should be shorter than the other. Unless later ones were both the same length? Different diameter could be a problem lol unless theyre sort of a tapered bolt and the threaded section is the same.
But yeah if need be Pick-A-Part it, or Comm Spares just down the road. Both are good in their own way
EDIT: Disconnect the battery before even touching the starter motor. The main power wire is a direct connection to the battery, no protection. Just being clear![]()
