Trouble with 3rd gear

Bought a VS wagon off a mate which he converted from auto to manual, Not to sure if its a V6 or V8 manual out of a VN but yer was hoping someone might know anyway. Its a 5 - speed

I cant gear down into 3rd gear at all, ive tried double clutching but it wont budge. Gearing up is fine so if i need to drop down to 3rd i have to go into 2nd then into 3rd. Also it makes a hell of a grind noise in 2nd and 3rd sometimes. Could it be anything else other than the syncros?

buggered synchro ,shift pads or something more major

I was hoping someone wouldnt say that haha. Is it hard to fix the syncros? expensive?

pretty easy box to work on i just rebuilt one in the shed took maybe 3 hours parts were from www.thegearbox.org cost 300 ish for all new synchros and lots of other bits we got

Is it hard to do? Never even changed a clutch, but if its easy enough to do by just following a guide i would give it a go.
