I'm thinking of putting a VR V6 motor into my clapped out VG ute just to give it a little extra life until I get a turbo diesel ute(bit better for lugging horse floats around the countryside) . It's got the VN Series 2 motor of course with a 5 speed gearbox.
Will any VR V6 engine bolt up to the T5 gearbox or do I need to find a manual VR V6 motor? If I can't find a suitable VR motor and have to stick with a Series 2 VN/VP motor again will I need to find a manual motor or are the autos compatible? I know the Series 1 VN auto and manual motors have different cranks but not to sure about the Series 2's.
Thanks in advance
I thought there wasn't much of a difference with motors.
VN s2 - VR v6 are the same, just chuck the old flywheel onto the new vr engine and she'll all bolt up sweet. Your main drama may be with wiring as VR have a different compression ratio so use a different computer, whether or not you can use the VG computer system on a VR engine without problems i dont know. The reason you cant just plug in the VR computer is because it has to connect to the vehicle Body Control Module and talk to that, where as pre VR didnt have a BCM.
I believe some internals on the VR are different to those on the VN/VP but honestly I don't know what. Mainly I just need to know whether the T5 I have will bolt straight up or am I going to have to get adaptor plates etc. I know Series 1 and Series 2 motors are not interchangable. Auto's will only bolt up to auto's and manuals to manuals as the crank and bolt patterns are different. I need to know whether it's the same scenario with Series 2 and VR motors or are they pretty much interchangable as I don't want to have to spend big $ on adaptor plates etc.
Thanks again
Thanks for that VK SL 202. I have been reading through other posts on the forum regarding wiring and the guys that have done this conversion say the wiring is straight forward, just match up the plugs. There's one plug that won't have a mate but apparently that's not an issue(can't remember for the life of me what it is now, but it's a sensor).
Computer may be something to look into too. Will have to re-read the other post and see what they say if anything.
