some people say the series 1 is quicker off the line so its better but others say the series 2 is very slightly more refined so...

From personal experience series 1 go harder but are always rattly and sound horrid even my series 1 with 127ks had a noisy timing chain, series 1 are also hard to get to the thermostat housing, series 2 have the restricter in the manifold and usually don't take off as hard and have thermostat housing at the front and are usually less rattlely and I think a much better engine.

Personally 2 (though they werent exactly a "series"). 1 the rear main seal was rope and you have to repack it instead of just tapping a new rubber one in 2. As said the thermostat is at the rear of the motor of a 1. Ive also noticed 1's dont usually have a radiator cap lol (obviously can be changed) also an extra coolant bottle and more hoses? Never quite understood that but can be changed if need be. 1's also arent as easy to bolt a flywheel to if its auto.

2 was also used up to VR. If anything go for one from a VR, few things was changed like bearings and pistons which also bumped the compression ratio up a tad.

Series 1 harmonic balancer are easy to remove (don't need a puller). The rear main seal doesn't seen to leak on my Series 1, but a small dribble on the Series 2.

Series 2 has a much neater heater hose and coolant pipe set-up. Series 2 with the restricter removed have much better throttle response.
