hey, im just wondering how hard it would be to change a series 1 vn commodore sump gasket with the engine still in the car...???
i know there isnt a lot of room under there, what would be involved?
thanks in advance, mark
Pretty tricky you will have to unbolt the engine mounts and raise the engine, probably be tricky to do it properly like cleaning the surface and aligning gasket and silicon could get messy but you never no until you give it a crack
Heard that you can also jack the engine up a little and drop the k-frame for better access.
Was in the process of trying to change the sump gasket on a vp v6 as I thought it was leaking. Half way through I discovered that the harmonic balancer shaft had a big groove worn in it which was causing me to lose my vast quantities of oil. Anyway, I got pretty close to changing the sump gasket and I'm glad I didn't have to in the end. Theres not a lot of room down there at all and it would be pretty hard to get it aligned nicely and bolted back on. That said, others have done it so it is possible, it just won't be fun.
1. 1990 VN Exec V6
2. 1993 VP BT1 3.8L - Now wrecking for parts!
3. 1991 VP Berlina V8 - RIP
Looking for a good condition VN - VS V8!!!
yeah i thought i might have to raise the engine, and it is the sump gasket that is leaking, ive steam cleaned the engine many times and thats the only place oil is leaking from. i think ill save it for a long weekend....
