Now i know that alot of people have asked about this topic befor but there is some other questions i have as well that i haven't seen asked. so firstly it looking likely that i will get my hands on a 5l and manual conversion for basically nothing. on the weekend my dad decided to t-bone a hilux 4x4. he has a vs 5l with t5 5speed in it. I never really wanted to put a 5l in the car( was happy to supercharge the 6) but if the ute gets written off i would be silly to not do it. now this is where i would like some advice. i know about swapping the k frames and springs and all that kind of stuff. but i want to know. 1) if i buy a new vn v8 engine harness will that be fine to just plug in.(already have a vp v8 ecu) 2) is it just the tacho in the instrument cluster that needs to be changed or is there any else that needs to be swapped in the dash or anywhere else interior wise. 3) i want to maintain the air con system as i have 1 kid pus a new one on the way, but due to the crash the front condensor is smashed on the ute. now i just got a new one in mine last week. is it the same as a v8 one. what else will be needed if any for the air con.
also if there is any other advise any one wants to give im all ears.
cheers for any help guys.
AFAIK you should be right to use the VN loom with a vn/vp ecu (that's assuming the engine is not a 99 or later series 3 i.e. roller cam)
Only the tacho.
Unsure on the condensor front, but you would think it would be the same, worth a try.
ok so ended up getting a vn v8 engine harness.but with the v8 instrument cluster. is the only thing different the tacho or is the hole item different. i got one there but i know my unit works so i am hoping i can just change the tacho over and still use the rest of mine
all you need to do is change the resistor on the tacho to make it work correctly with a v8

Hi Clint, currently doing exactly the same procedure at the moment and I found the condenser is different as a/c pipes enters and exits on the left and right side of the condenser on the 8 whereas in the six it enters and exits on the right only(passenger side). No big drama though they are pretty cheap. I have read all the posts about swapping the motor and box over and there is some good info in here but if you get stuck flick me a pm and I will try and help you out with anything. My ute is nearly finished and it is fairly straight forward swap but I got carried away and rebuilt motor heads etc. There is now some serious dollars in the motor (shudder) in a VP ute worth about 1500. I also did all the suspension etc as well. Farkin cars, money pits. Hehe. Cheers.
