There's a petrol station just down the road that seems to up its prices 36 hours before everyone else, it went up to $1.39 yesterday at about midday and I filled up with petrol at a different servo for $1.24 this morning. I don't know if the other one is still up high.

geez i love these high petrol prices. Im safe in the knowledge that the government are gunna use thier tax windfall wisely, and are looking forward to the government passing down the costs with substantailly improved services. Im sure they wont just use it for themselves as increased wages or superannuation.

I am sure that they would not do that at all (said very sarcastically). They probably wont even admit to an increase in revenue. There will be a lot more people getting gas conversions. I would if I could afford to do it.

well i dunno about the rest you blokes/sheilas .. but im quite happy to pay up to about $2 a litre for petrol in this country.
dont get me wrong .. im really dirty about the governments taxing fuel TWICE and about the AMOUNT they tax.

but the way i see it .. australia still has some of the cheapest petrol in the developed world (outside of the arab world)
i dont complain about paying 1.20L when for example .. all over europe its the equivalent of $3-$4
    per litre

this is a LUCKY country .... for a reason

I think that it is a good thing that fuel prices are increasing. Makes everyone think harder about how wastefully we all use a finite resource that also contributes to disturbing the planet's climate.

While the price may go down somewhat in the short term, say in 6-12 months, it's going to rise even further long term. There are a couple of billion Chinese, Indians and others who, understandably, would like to enjoy the same lifestyle that we do and, to do so, are going to demand more energy.

china and india demand are the main reason driving the fuel up.

Chickety china chineese chiken and Kerpal the cab driver have got alot to answer for.

i really HATE how 'sydney-centralised' this country has become (mostly to sydney-siders btw lol)

might i take this opportunity to remind you all that Melbourne was ranked a helluva lot higher on its public transport efficiency than sydeny was in an international survey.

i think (probably wrong it was a year or two ago..) melbourne was 4th and sydney copped 20something ... in the world

the problems with public transport is there are too many underirables on there. It seems all the odd ppl of socitey collectively congregate there at the same time

Not sure where you're intending to go with this but if you are suggesting that public transport is the only alternative to driving...

I think that the private car is going to be with us for as long as long as people want to move around. I'll think that it will change somewhat though, and that will be influenced by those same Chinese and Indians I mentioned before, who will have different (no) preconceptions as to what a car should be/do/look like. I am fairly certain though, that it will be smaller and certainly lighter than what we drive now.

I'm currently doing my best to do as little driving in my own car as possible, and I'm trying to drive the work car a little gentler. It's a Hyundai Getz so it's already pretty efficient but I reckon I can squeeze more out of a tank. It's the Getz I filled up for cheap this morning, my own car has been running on not much more than a quarter in the tank for the last week - I could only afford to put in $2 worth last night and I'm scared that when I finally have money to fill it up on Thursday night I'm going to spend $1.40 a litre :'(
