    Question Speedo still not working?

    Hi,
I changed my speedo to level 2 the other week, finally got the spare on yesterday and took it for spin, my previous L1 cluster worked fine except the speedo, so i replaced it with a L2, and the speedo still doesnt work in a 0-20kmph range, it started workign when i took it for a spin and revved it ahrd and got to maybe 30kph and it showed up, then again i did give it a whack before, but still doesnt work at low speeds?
Also, this new dash, the trip meter and odo dont work.
    Any idea?
I checked the voltage thingo teeth when i replaced it and they all contact fine.
    thanks

Sounds like the Vehicle speed sensor is on its way out

As for cluster sounds like you have a level3 with lcd screens? if its level 2 then itd be the fact the speedo doesnt work

As far as I knew the odo and trip meter don't work when the speedo doesn't work as they run off the same electrical current? That would also help explain it if the odomete cog teeth are all intact.

Could be the speed sensor down on the back of the trans, when mine started to go it wouldn't work at low speeds, then it eventually would only randomly work every now and then until it stopped all together.

No i definitely have a level 2, by trip meter i mean the thing with the set button that resets it.

how much is it to replace a speed sensor can it be done at home?

I got a second hander for $40 from the wreckers. Its a pretty easy job if you've got car ramps or axle stands, just need to get under the car and undo a couple of screws (or bolts, can't remember). When your under there it's at the rear end of the trans on the passenger side, wires coming out are dead give away.

stuff all came out of mine but I had the back up on ramps so that it would have all pooled at the front of the trans

well, i guess i could just put a tray underneath it haha.

    question,
if i do a diagnostics, and the VSS is needing relacement, will i get a code 24?
If i dont get a code 24, is it not the VSS

The speed sensor only has to be unscrewed, no tools required. That + the white plug and it's out. There shouldn't be any fluid leakage either, although there may be a few drips.

Code 24 sets under fairly specific circumstances; no speed signal with a MAP (manifold pressure) signal that indicates an engine vacuum that can only be achieved under decel., for a certain period of time (a few seconds). The code will not always set if the speed signal is only intermittent rather than completely absent. Worth trying the sensor I think.

Do you have any mates that you could 'borrow' a sensor off to see if that is the problem. Shouldn't be a big deal to take their car off the road for 30mins while you test it out and it saves having to buy one until your certain.

Cheap6 is right about the code, it does need some pretty specific conditions to set it off. Drove around with a barely functioning speedo for 4 months before the code was set haha.

Do you have an ODO reading? if not the trip computer is not getting 12 v via the orange white/black white wires. Are the dash plugs in the correct way? If a plug is upside down it will do silly things.

all the plugs are the correct way it started with the tacho dying and the speedo being intermitted. you would hit a bump it would die , hit another it would come back on . to the point where no matter what you did it wouldnt work.

jacko84 the speedo sensor is new works in all cars but this one

If the tacho and speedo are "dropping dead" in 1 car but work fine in another then it will be the wires of the main loom. The L3 cluster gauges and the L2 gauges run off the same wires so it's not the L3 upgrade wires. you should be able to run a L2 dash and get the same thing happening that you are getting with the L3 cluster.

The purple white wire is the speed signal. Brown red is the tacho from memory.
