    Default 304 vs LS1 for Street/Track buildup

My dad and I are looking at building up a street/track car.

We're planning on using a VN or VP for the build (Probably going to choose the VP because we prefer it in the looks department), and am curious as to which motor to choose.

Either way, the motor WILL be worked. We're looking at running about 500hp or so (Well, hoping anyway), and aren't really sure which motor to go.

I know that the LS1 is more capable but that requires the conversion, and I'm not entirely sure how difficult the conversion is.

On the other hand, the 304 is a proven strong motor as well, and doesn't require engineering.

BUT, the LS1 will bolt up much better to a T56 which is stronger, and we'd prefer a 6-speed as well.

So, we're kinda leaning towards a conversion, but would just like other peoples opinions.

    Thanks.

It will depend on how much money you want to throw at it. If you want to keep it licensed, then engineering is necessary, but a dedicated track car doesn't need all that. If you get a V6 starter car, then it will need inspecting anyway to put a V8 into it.

Personally I would go the LS1, more work to get it in, but less to achieve 500 ponies.....but then torque is what you seek.....

I understand it will need to be engineered. That's not a problem, I'm willing to do it anyway. I want it to be a perfectly legal street car as well. Just more suited to the track, if you get what i mean?

Money isn't a problem. Obviously, I'm not willing to spend 200k. But I know it's going to cost, but it will be a long term project. As I get more money, I'll start putting more things onto it, until finally it's all together ready to be blue-slipped, engineered and registered.

As I thought with the LS1. What exactly would be involved in getting an LS1 with a T56 into a VP commodore body? Do I have to get things like engine and gearbox mounts custom made? Or is there already pre-fabricated ones to suit?

Does all the stuff applying to a VN apply to a VP pretty much?

Pretty much as the vp had a light make over body and trim wise, along with a wider track.
