I'm thinking about chopping the roof off the old girl. I remember reading somewhere that removing the roof weakens the chassis or it's ability to handle torsional streses. I'm guessing you'd have to weld new members into the chassis to help prevent this.
Any ideas?

Removing the roof of your vehicle will compromise its structural integrity, and as you guessed will require significant underbody bracing just to keep the car from collapsing in between the axles. You could think of it like this, the roof is what stops the floor from flexing and the floor stops the roof flexing, so if you removed one, the other needs to be strengthened to cope. The best thing to do, would be to have a chat with an automotive engineer in your area to find out how much structural bracing would be required, as well as whatever else you need to do, to keep the car road legal and registerable.
you cut your roof off your car will end up in a V shape
do it ...........
Nothing some extra steel under the car cant fix. It will probably look like a bucket of shit on wheels however.
Good luck getting an engineers certificate for it.

Ive seen a VN soft top, used to cruze around tweed bout 5yrs ago, i think holden made a couple. It was maroon
holy crap....
Holden didn't make VN soft tops.
If you cut the roof off a VN it will fall over. Like a box with no tape.
Just wait till you go back to school in weeks time and you'll forget about it.
Yep thats ugly.
I was looking for that photo yesterday to put up here
Nothing wrong with people wanting to do something unique! Yes he obviously realises work needs to be done as far as strengthening hence why he asked the question.
Regardless of who is a student and who isn't, you really need to get off your high horse. Everyone here started somewhere, even you.
To the OP: I say keep researching it mate, it is always good to think outside the box. Not saying it is viable but do not listen to the few bitter and twisted people on here.
is it going to be a 4 door convertible?
because that could be horrid....
Regardless of him actually doing it or not is no reason to respond with such an arrogant comment.
People like you make others not want to ask questions on this forum. This is the entire point of the forum, to share idea's, advice, feedback etc, NOT to insult students or new comers to the car scene.
Edit - Enough said - back to topic
If people ask genuine questions I endeavour to answer it. I don't mind how extraordinary you want to be.
But the OP is clearly dreaming, if he was serious about building a convertible VN commodore the original post would have contained a substantially more information.
He was "Guessing" it would need "Chassis Improvements".
Seriously, I'm getting the impression he was standing beside it imagining it without a roof, and then dreaming about chucking laps in a convertible VN with his supermodel Girlfriend.
If he was serious, the OP would have been allot more to the point and asking specific questions about the construction of the chassis.
It wasn't.
So how can anyone short of an engineer answer the question?
convertables (mainly astras) are for girls you sleep with not girls you marry!~
It is obvious that you have more knowledge than him in regards to his topic, why not answer his question without having a go at his education status?
A simple "It is not feasible due to engineering requirements, costs incurred, structural changes etc" or something along those lines would have been nicer don't you think?
Seriously, you have the knowledge but your attitude is terrible sometimes.
Why isn't it feasible though?
If he had the ability to do it, it's perfectly feasible.
Tell the OP, he wants to know, not me.
Seriously, the idea of my first post was in hope that you would open your eyes to your arrogant posts. As i said earlier, you occasionally show signs of knowledge but your attitude and immaturity constantly brings you down.
Can't help those who won't help themselves so i will leave you with that. I am certain I am not the only one who notices your "mood swings" of late.
LOL.
I've noticed my mood swings don't worry about that.
Sleep deprivation, and you lot probably cop the fall out of some personal things going on in my life as well. For which I appologise.
My only rule is, if you ask a question. ASK A QUESTION.
Do some research, understand the task at hand and then draw intelligent queries from that!
I don't mock people for asking basic questions, as you say everyone needs to start somewhere. But when someone says they wish to do something and has done absolutly no research on the topic then how can we take them seriously.
I.e
Ï want to build a convertible VN commodore, What should I look for in order to do so?
What kind of things should I consider?"
The community could answer that.
But;
"I'm gona make a convertible, i'll have to weld braces in aye?"
Is a dumb question. And that's why 4 or 5 people made sarcastic comments prior to mine.
