Hey guys,
My car has been making this weird noise for quite some time but only occasionally so i didnt think much of it but its been doing it more lately its really weird cant really describe it so ill attach a recording of it (you may have to turn you're speakers up its fairly quiet) some things that may be important.
car is on gas.
it only does it when cold not hot or warm.
if any one knows what it is let me know!
Cheers
The file is showing as corrupt once its downloaded and you try to open it, even if you try to open it directly from the link, it still says its corrupted.
i just tryed and had no problem playing the zipped file i unzipped it with winrar and played using 3 diff programs (itunes, windows media player and vlc) works fine.
File worked fine when I downloaded it. From what I can hear I'm thinking alternator bearing/brushes.

It's not the alternator. I have replaced it and the idle bearing, powersteering pump, water pump, and even a secondhand compressor since I have replaced the compressor the noise is slightly different bit still basicly the same.
I know the sound by not even listening its your tensioner pulley, alot of people replace everything but it
It's not the pulley I've replaced it. It was making some noise but not the one I'm talking about.
Just a quick note that may be important the recoding was taken from inside the car. You can't hear it from the outside. It sounds like it's coming from the passenger side. With that said it is definitely not the cooler fan as it is off when I start the car.
Any body know at all??
it says file is corrupt for me too. but if it's anything like my car it comes from near the top of the engine on the passengers side, like a rattling? i've been told not to worry about it, would have to hear it and make sure it's definately the same noise though
might be the fan for the hivac unit (ie heater air con)

spun harmonic ball and water pump by the sounds of it
its not the water pump becuase its been replaced the harmonic balancer is the only thing that hasn't been replaced on the front but why would it make bearing noises?
apparently there is a rubber band that is been pressed in the middle of the balancer thats wat some mecanik told me a whie ago
don't think its the harmonic balancer
Do a compression test. Sounds like an intake valve...almost through the airbox
Hows the oil condition?
or the balance shaft ?
Have you tried taking off the belt and running the engine?
If the noise disappears it's one of your ancillaries, if it doesn't then it's something within the engine.
You'll only need to run for about 30 seconds if that to know if the noise goes or not.

hey thanks for the reply's the oil is fine just serviced and i service it every 10,000ks. Can i just take it to any mechanic to get a compression test? as far as the balance shaft i have no idea is there a way to check it with out dissembling the engine? i haven't tried running the engine without the belt i didn't really see much point as all the stuff on the front is new and it was still doing it before things were changed plus its hard as it doesn't do it all the time only some times when cold, its just increased lately but ill give it a go may as well see if it rules it out 100%.
cheers

Kind of hard to hear but, it sounds similar to the noise my car is making. the noise in mine is a dodgy injector. I'd need to hear it first hand to tell you for sure. a decent mechanic should know immediately what the noise is.
i've got the balance shaft bearing making noises on mine. i've been told just to leave it and keep driving it until it breaks and get a new engine. to disconnect it you need to take off the timing chain cover and just remove the chain for the balance shaft. if you do end up doing that. let us know how it goes =P i just deal with the rattle
its not a dodgy injector they got replaced a while ago and it was making the noise before and after. some people think it may be a noise from the transmission?
G'day, My vp had a similar noise when cold. After it warmed up it stopped because there was a crack in the exaust manifold.
I guess the cast iron expanded a bit and closed the crack. Extractors fixed the problem.
did yours only do it sometimes because with mine there's no real pattern to it. it only does it when cold but it may do it three days in a row then not at all for a week
