Speed sensor may have failed in the gearbox.

Correct. The speed sensor often will not be replaced when gearboxes are rebuilt.

if the speed sensor stuffs up, do the km numbers stop working too?? the speedo doesn't work so can't tell how fast i am going and the km numbers don't turn over either. if it is the speed sensor, how hard is it to replace and to take off and put on?? also, where on the gearbox is it??

Correct, if speed sensor fails the dash/ecu will have no input of the car moving

Its located on the right hand side (drivers) of the gearbox towards the back. very easy to replace.

Id highly recommend you investing in a service manual for these cars, worth their weight in gold.

Yeah those things are easy as to replace even with crappy tools. Suggest you visit wreckers and get one off yerself, then you know what to do to put it back. Don't put too much tension on the wiring ie whirling it around over your head in triumph by the wires, they can get brittle and snap off.

thanks everyone. you guys are a gold mine of information and were completely right!!! it was the speed sensor, went to the wreckers and got another and now works fine. thanks again for your help. i have the gregory's manual for the car and doesn't tell you nothing!!! if it is in there, it's very well hidden.
