Default Is this motor worth the trouble?

    Hi Guys
I've bought a 2nd hand VR motor to go into my VP from a local wrecker. Posted a thread about it a week or so ago. Anyway started tidying up the replacement and took off first rocker cover to find a thick off-white gunk all over the rocker gear and up under the rocker cover. Second rocker cover is the same. Obviously an oil and water mix and it doesn't look healthy at all. What do you think? Is it an obvious sign that the engine is cactus? I certainly don't intend to go to the trouble of installing an engine that is likely to be no good.

could be as little as a head gasket i spose
    or inlet manifold gasket
just pull heads off and have a look if you think its rooted then theres nothing to lose
clean it all down with turps of something empty oil and fill start again

take it back and tell them to swap it over for one without a blown headgasket it possibly could have been cooked aswell as the blown gasket i wouldnt waste my time doing all the work putting a substandard motor in.

Thanks for the responses guys. Yeah, I reckon best case scenario is leaking inlet manifold but could be more serious. Plastic fitting where the by-pass hose goes into the inlet manifold was broken so that makes it more likely that the engine has suffered heat stress. I should have looked at the motor a little more carefully before I bought it. I guess it's going back
