    Cool VN Bellmouth

    Hi guys.
I have a 1989 vn V6, I recently took the car to my mechanic to get him to find out why it has a shit idle .He checked everything out and all is good with the engine. He did say the 89 VN V6 engines did have a shit idle from new and thats why the later V6's had a bell mouth instaled.my mechanic instaled this part in my manifold .I dont think it's done sweet #### all. My qestion is if any one can help.Is the bell mouth a good thing or are they crap?? What does it do ?? Should i take it out?? Any help is all ways very apprecieted. Cheers

The bell mouth distributes the intake air more evenly to the intake runners, the later engine also had a few ECU tweaks to make the bellmouth work. Just fitting one to a series 1 won't fix the shit idle.

Idling a bit rough isn't anything to worry about, unless it almost stalls. Most EFI cars will miss occasionally at idle. I would clean the throttle body and IAC first, check all the vacuum hoses, and probably do a good service on it. Replace all the filters, the plugs, maybe even the leads, but if accelerates well, then the leads are probably OK.

    Thumbs up

Hi Mate.Thank you for the help and reply. The mechanic has checked everything with my car from the fuel pump to the compression in the engine. And every thing is good.So buy the sounds of things going on what every one tells me the V6's run like this and that is normal. To be honest and this is what i said to my mechanic, Im to use too old engines Chev enigines 283's and 327's these engines run so smoooooooth .I had a 1955 Chev 6 once and that engine was so smooth you could put a glass of water on the rocker cover when it was idling. Mybe i need a 283 chev in my VN lol. Forgive me for being stupid but what is the ECU in a V6 ?

The ECU is the engine management system, it basically controls the fuel and timing.

Just about everyone complains about Commodore rough idle, it's normal, what is abnormal is one that idles really smoothly and never misses.
