Default Please tell me its not the auto :s

Hey all, I have a little pickle .. I've got a 90 VN wagon and have since discovered it has another nasty gremlin. It started about 4 weeks ago where, when i started the car after spending money on it, got half way down the road and then it started making a whirling sound .. (it sounds like i am spinning 1 wheel in the wet as fast as i can). When it does this the car is gutless as all hell, and the motor sounds like i am punching it with the hand brake on. about 1k down the road it stopped and i got all the power back :S .. It now does it ALLLL the time but only when i get to 3500 (overtaking) in all gears that its in. I also have a whisling sound at the front of the motor, but im guessing thats the belt or PS pump. PLEASE HELP. The car is so friggen dangerous right now cause i have NO POWER to do anything .. and i dont like it !!

Oh i might add that when it started 4 weeks ago, it struggled bad and the winding wound happened at 2500 it was almost as if the bands in the auto were slipping to the crap and nearlly buggered .. the car also has a stupid miss still, and since this problem has started, I have been hearing a thumping from the ex at the back of it .. (before the diff) I have replaced the exhaust from cat and back due to excessive oil being dumped into it (I knocked the oil container off the window grate and it hit the LH bank :S

Hey mate, have you checked out your trans fluid levels and have you had it serviced recently? Slipping is usually due to a failing band or clutch packs but it would be incredible for all the clutch packs to be burnt out and the band too. Normally the clutches for 1st and 2nd are pretty solid. Could be some issues with the torque converter not delivering the power, again check your trans fluid.

Hey mate, Yeah i checked it all today and rang the previous owner ( family friend) to find out when it was serviced .. Now the fluid is red and just below the full line (when hot) and It has been serviced in the last 12 months thank god.

the Auto isnt slipping it just sounds like it is. cause even if i slowly press the accelerator in first, second it still does the whining sound and is still slugish .. it just feels like the hand brake is on :S I get all the power in the world in first till about 3500 then it dies in the ass from then on there Im just worried cause it sounds like the whining sound is coming from underneath the car

Ok i have changed the cat over. Now to change over the rear muffler as the cat has been punched out or fallen to bits .. But because i dont know it looks like i am going to have to change it anyway. I do have a little bit more go but the thing rattles its brains out ( out of tune) At the top end, 3500 onwards) I have rechecked my Crank angle sensor and all in all i have power, But nothing from 60 ks :S.. I was thinking 02 Sensor next aswell, Any idea?

Ok, this is getting passed the point of funny, Changed the 02 Sensor and the rest of the exhaust and still nothing .. Exept its gutless 50 ks now :S... Can it be the Auto causing the car seem like it is.. I dont know .. I am over it!!
    Changed:
    Injectors
    Crank angle sensor
    exhaust
    Cat

all i have left to find, is my sanity!

Hmm .. Well there is nothing left in the Cat .. It looks as if the cat was made with out the Honeycomb center :S .. I did change it to this cat when i did the heads as oil went down the exh, so i though stuff it, ill just change it. I have lost the note i had but gain the whistling twice as bad out the rear since i changed it to this one on it now. Which is leading to a rear muffler blockage :S .. But it confussed the crap out of me last night when i drove it. No whistling, no hesitation, No nothing, Until it warmed up .. I have just changed the thermostat, and coolent temp sensor, If its not them, What other sensor can i check/replace .. :P

Hey mate, mine did pretty much the same thing, owned it for a week, drove BEAUTIFUL then all of a sudden it was a bit sluggish going into reverse, then started slipping going into first, then just got beyond the joke to the point that reverse completely went... I had to replace the gearbox... Im not saying its the same problem, but i would consider taking it to a transmission specialist and seeing if he has any idea.

Maybe, just maybe, the one-way sprag on the stator in the torque converter is seizing up, making the stator stand still in the rotating fluid while the whizzy bits either side of it keep on rotating.
