Well I've been on a wild goose chase trying to find where the source of a coolant leak after the pain in the backside checking the welch plug behind the power steering pump on the head only to find it is the timing cover gasket . Can anyone tell me how to get the timing cover off as I am pulling my bloody hair out.
You need to remover the harmonic balancer you can leaver water pump on undo all hoses around it and ohter shit in the way then remover all bolts holds it in.
Water pump bolts i think 2 need undoing theres also 4 it think on the bottom of timing cover bolted through sump.
When refitting make sure you line the oil pump drive up[ with the crank coller

Also some of the bolts go through water galleries and can be quite badly corroded. If they are don't reuse them, replace them. I tried reusing corroded bolts and snapped one off inside the block, it wasn't fun to fix that's for sure.
Another point to remember is the bottom of the timing cover mates up with the top of the sump. There is a gasket between the two so you'll need to be careful to make sure you don't damage it. Last thing you want is to have to take the sump off to replace the sump gasket too.
Might also be a good idea to check the condition of the front crank seal and timing chain + tensioner while you have the timing cover off. If anything is looking worn or damaged replace it now and save having to take the cover off again later.
1. 1990 VN Exec V6
2. 1993 VP BT1 3.8L - Now wrecking for parts!
3. 1991 VP Berlina V8 - RIP
Looking for a good condition VN - VS V8!!!
As said above, little tip is take all the water hoses off and run the engine so it spits out all the water/coolant 1st....
Can leave the waterpump on.
Check timing chain tensioner, I would personally recommend changing it if you are going to go to all the effort of taking off the timing cover.
Remember a razor to get all the gasket off, and get a block of wood and some 400 grit sand paper and just go over it just to make sure.
Also you need to buy it as a kit (comes with ever gasket/seal/oring for the timing cover), I brought an acl kit and i think the part number was TC30. I think it cost about $32 (i could be wrong)
thats all i can remember off the top of my head lol, but it is a pretty easy job
Also a heads up, you get a gasket in the kit for the oil pump housing (i think thats what it is called) so you might aswell change it and while your there change the oil pressure spring with one from an ecotec, will give the buick more oil pressure, think it cost about $5-10, every buick owner should do this![]()
