'gear box problem' shifting from 3rd to drive gear

Just brought a vp commodore an wen you drive it drives fine from 1st to 2nd to third but from third to drive u have to hold it flat until it gets to about 5 thousand revs diing 80-90 k an it shifts to 4th!! Ounce u get it in drive ounce it tends to shift all gears fine any explanaton??

I've got the same problem with my wagon, though mine does it when I fire her up and then put it in D and cruise off then it slams into 2nd and takes awhile to change to 3rd and 4th. Im so over it, I'm thinking either new box or rebuild...
