VN SS tank problem

Hi all,

Got my hands on a VN SS long range tank, i took out the sender unit and pump to inspect and replace the feed pump but i found the internal return line (the rubber hose) has come off the fitting on the tank wall and is floating around, it is still connected at the swirl pot end. Is there any way to fix it or is the tank as good as done?

I had to fix one of these today, I had to cut a hole in the tank to get to it and weld it up when I was done. If you know some one with tiny hands you may have success through the sender unit hole. If cutting and welding empty all the fuel then half fill with water and swish around, empty it out and place enough water to line the bottom of the tank. Cut the hole in the top centre front of the tank, you only need to cut three ways and then open up the flap. Don't go overboard with the size of the hole as there are pipes on the top of the tank that let air out when your filling it up.

Yeh, i might have a go at chopping it open but im not real keen on welding a fuel tank even if its been full of water. ill let you know if im successful or not.

It's just a return line, it doesn't matter that it's not connected inside the tank. The fuel ends up inside the tank anyway. Don't let the tank get to almost empty and you won't have any problems.

Yes it does matter if it's disconnected inside the tank, the return line feeds to the bottom of the surge tank in which the fuel pump sits, when the fuel level drops below the top of the surge tank (just under half) the fuel pump will empty the surge tank quicker than the fuel can be replaced. It results in loss of fuel and stalling around corners and fuel starvation under heavy throttle. It's very annoying and also dangerous in roundabouts.
