Just buy another one. You can still get them new. Not worth messing with

and it only houses the oil pump, line the pump dog clutch up and slide it in before you tighten it up

I've been told they are around $400 new - whats your take on that price Reaper? I've fitted a series 2 unit to my wagon as it has the plug at the front for something (not on the series 1 units).

The last series 1 unit I purchased for $25 off Ebay but it only lasted 3 years before it corroded away - yes running coolant as your ment to.

the cam angle sensor doesn't get used until vr auto guess that's the sensor and plug you mean, the spring holding the cam in on a s1 requires the s1 timing cover as the s2 cover doesn't have the spot cast into it to put the correct amount of pressure on it to keep the cam in the block, the shape of the casting on the s2 timing cover will probably chew the bush on the retaining spring out if it turns

Yes!! I knew there was a reason you cant use the S2 timming cover - Is this why my VN wont run correctly? I do have this cam angle sensor on the timming cover - but nothing plugged into it. It's on the 88 wagon so it's a S1 motor.

the sensor is just filling a hole, same as s2 and vp and vr manual, nothing plugs into it, only the vr auto uses it for banked injection even though the other models have it fitted to the engine.

if the retainer was causing problems i'd guess it would be pretty bad, in theory the timing chain should keep it inline till it gets stretched, i don't have the front off an engine to check which way the cam would move from the thrust force of the helical cut gear for the balance shaft either way it'd push 1 way for acceleration and the other under deccel, the s2 thrust plate held in with 3 screws is a much better idea.

in theory when i looked at a s2 timing cover i considered turning/filing the head of a bolt with a flat edge for the cam retainer bush to sit on and threading the bolt from the inside to the out side so then you'd use a nut to hold the water pump on but decided it was to much stuffing around so just threw the s1 timing cover onto the s2 engine i was stuffing around fitting a s1 cam in.

I have Vn engine No VH1000010 ready to strip down over the xmas break - it has the S2 timming cover on it so I guess I'll find out what happens from that! It was used as an injector test engine in Vic for a few years and I picked up on Ebay for $50. Reaper picked it up for me and helped get it to SA.

I thought all the early motors were used in test cars and would have been scrapped - but on researching the engine numbers found that the first 5,000 or so were stored FIFO - so the very first 5,000 VN's got motors with VH1005000 reducing to next to zero (pre production units to stock car yards with) Anyway I digress -
